To him that reads with careless eyesB
My present theme affordsC
But little scope for enterpriseB
In buttering one's lordsC
Fines he would urge have always bulkedD
Largely to Those that ruleE
For plainly every man They mulctD
Contributes to the poolE
-
But when in ages dead and goneF
Our fathers fought with SinG
However hard they laid it onH
They didn't rub it inG
While These not only bring to bearI
Their dark prerogativesJ
But diabolically airI
The pleasure that it givesJ
-
Here is the Iron Hand that buildsK
Our realms beyond the seaL
No suaviter in modo gildsL
Their fortiter in reM
Here is no washy velvet gloveN
To pad the Fist of FearO
None of your guiding charms of LoveN
None of your hogwash hereP
-
No From Their thrones amid the starsL
They glower athwart the landD
Implacable with 'eye like MarsL
To threaten and command '-
Too cold too truculent to stayM
The awful bolt They flingQ
They make no bones about it TheyM
Are pleased to do this thingQ
-
Blind to the victim's mask of woeR
Deaf to his poignant howlsL
No pity stirs Their bosoms noR
Reluctance wrings Their bow'lsL
By prompt and ready cash aloneS
Their wrath shall be appeasedD
Who pile it on like gods and ownS
Like men to being pleasedD
