| From the glare of the day at its height | C |
| On a land that was blinding to see | D |
| From the wearisome hiss of the night | C |
| By a turn of the wheel I am free | D |
| - | |
| I have passed to the heart of the Hills | E |
| For a season of halcyon hours | F |
| 'Mid the music of murmurous rills | F |
| And the delicate odours of flowers | F |
| - | |
| And I walk in an exquisite shade | G |
| Where the fern tasselled boughs interlace | F |
| And the verdurous fringe of the glade | G |
| Is a marvel of fairylike grace | F |
| - | |
| And with never an aim or a plan | H |
| I can wander in uttermost ease | F |
| Where the only reminders of Man | H |
| Are the monkeys aloft in the trees | F |
| - | |
| Or perchance on the 'silvery mere ' | - |
| In a 'shallop' I lazily float | I |
| With it's possible some one to steer | J |
| Or with no one which lightens the boat | I |
| - | |
| O the glorious gift of release | F |
| From the chains that encircle the thrall | K |
| To be quiet and cool and at peace | F |
| And to loaf and do nothing at all | K |
| - | |
| I am clear of that infamous lark | L |
| I am far from the blare of the Band | M |
| And the bugles are silent the bark | L |
| Of the Colonel is hushed in the land | M |
| - | |
| And I say it again I am free | D |
| In the valleys of wandering bliss | F |
| And most gratefully 'own if there be | D |
| An Elysium on earth it is this ' | - |
