From the dust and the drought and the heatA
I am borne on the pinions of leaveB
From the things that are bad to repeatA
To the things that are good to receiveB
-
From the glare of the day at its heightC
On a land that was blinding to seeD
From the wearisome hiss of the nightC
By a turn of the wheel I am freeD
-
I have passed to the heart of the HillsE
For a season of halcyon hoursF
'Mid the music of murmurous rillsF
And the delicate odours of flowersF
-
And I walk in an exquisite shadeG
Where the fern tasselled boughs interlaceF
And the verdurous fringe of the gladeG
Is a marvel of fairylike graceF
-
And with never an aim or a planH
I can wander in uttermost easeF
Where the only reminders of ManH
Are the monkeys aloft in the treesF
-
Or perchance on the 'silvery mere '-
In a 'shallop' I lazily floatI
With it's possible some one to steerJ
Or with no one which lightens the boatI
-
O the glorious gift of releaseF
From the chains that encircle the thrallK
To be quiet and cool and at peaceF
And to loaf and do nothing at allK
-
I am clear of that infamous larkL
I am far from the blare of the BandM
And the bugles are silent the barkL
Of the Colonel is hushed in the landM
-
And I say it again I am freeD
In the valleys of wandering blissF
And most gratefully 'own if there beD
An Elysium on earth it is this '-
