Elegy On A Rhinoceros (recently Deceased) Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABBCC DEDEEAA AAAAAAA AFAFFGG HIHIJKK LALAAAA MAMAAMM

Come let us weep for Begum he is deadA
Dead and afar where Thamis' waters laveB
The busy marge he lies unvisitedA
Unsung above no cypress branches waveB
Nor tributary blossoms fringe his graveB
Only would these poor numbers advertiseC
His copious charms and mourn for his demiseC
-
Blithesome was he and beautiful the ZooD
Hath nought to match with Begum He was oneE
Of infinite humour well indeed he knewD
To catch with mobile lips th' impetuous bunE
Tossed him ward by some sire encouraged sonE
Half fearful yet of pride fulfilled to noteA
The dough swift homing down th' exultant throatA
-
Whilom he pensive stood infoliateA
Of comfortable mud and idly stirredA
His tiny caudal disproportionateA
But not ungraceful while a wanton herdA
Of revellers the mystic lens preferredA
Whereof the focus rightly they addrestA
And Phoebus being kind the button prestA
-
Then being frolic he as one distraughtA
Would blindly stumbling seek the watery vergeF
And sink nor rise again But when untaughtA
In craft the mourners raised the untimely dirgeF
Lo otherwhere himself would swift emergeF
Incontinent and crisp his tasselled earsG
And all vivacious own the sounding cheersG
-
Nothing of dark suspicion nor of guileH
Was limned on Begum his the mirthful glanceI
The genial port the comprehensive smileH
The very sunbeams shimmering loved to danceI
Within that honest open countenanceJ
And far as eye could pierce his roomy grinK
Was pink as 'twere Aurora dwelt thereinK
-
Yet he is dead Whether the froward catesL
Some lawless lodgment found nor coughs releasedA
Or if adown those hospitable gatesL
Drave the strong North or shrilled the ravening EastA
And ill requiting slew the wretched beastA
We nothing know only the news is criedA
Begum is dead we know not how he diedA
-
Still though the callous bards neglect to hymnM
Thy praises Begum though on dross intentA
The hireling sculptor pauseth not to limnM
Thy spacious visage kindly hands are bentA
E'en now to stuff thy frail integumentA
Then sleep in peace Belov d blest Sult nM
Of some Rhinokeraunian Devach nM
