Friend when the year is on the wingB
'Tis held a fair and comely thingB
To turn reflective glancesC
Over the days' forbidden ScrollD
See if we're better on the wholeD
And average our chancesE
-
Yet 'tis an awful thing to dragF
Each separate deed from out the bagF
That up till now has hidden 'tG
And bring before the shuddering viewH
All that we swore we wouldn't doH
Or should have done but didn'tG
-
The broken code the baffled lawsI
Our little private faults and flawsI
And every naughty habitG
Come whistling through the Waste of LifeJ
Until one longs to take a knifeJ
Feel for his heart and stab itG
-
Unchanged exultant one and allK
Rise up spontaneous to the callK
And bring their stings behind themL
But when the search is duly pliedG
For items on the credit sideG
One has a job to find themL
-
I know not why they change I knowM
None better how one's feelings growM
Distinctly kin to mutinyN
To see one's assets limping inO
All too preposterously thinO
To stand a moment's scrutinyN
-
I know that shock must follow shockP
Until the sole remaining RockP
That all one's hopes exist onQ
Crumbles beneath the crushing forceR
Of Conscience kicking like a horseR
And pounding like a pistonS
-
Hardly a little year has pastG
Since you I take it swore to castG
Aside the bonds that girt youH
And thought to stun the dazzled earthT
A pillared Miracle of WorthT
Raised on a plinth of VirtueH
-
One always does One wonders whyU
One knows that as the years go byU
One finds the same old blundersV
The same old acts the same old wordsW
And as one trots them out in herdsW
Or one by one one wondersV
-
-
Another year a touch of greyX
A little stiffness day by dayX
We feel the need of shall we sayX
Goggles to face the sun withY
A little loss of youthful bloomZ
A little nearer to the TombZ
Pardon this momentary gloomZ
Bang go the bells That's done withY
