When by my solitary hearth I sitA
And hateful thoughts enwrap my soul in gloomB
When no fair dreams before my mind's eye flitA
And the bare heath of life presents no bloomB
Sweet Hope ethereal balm upon me shedC
And wave thy silver pinions o'er my headC
-
Whene'er I wander at the fall of nightD
Where woven boughs shut out the moon's bright rayE
Should sad Despondency my musings frightD
And frown to drive fair Cheerfulness awayE
Peep with the moonbeams through the leafy roofF
And keep that fiend Despondence far aloofF
-
Should Disappointment parent of DespairG
Strive for her son to seize my careless heartH
When like a cloud he sits upon the airG
Preparing on his spell bound prey to dartH
Chase him away sweet Hope with visage brightD
And fright him as the morning frightens nightD
-
Whene'er the fate of those I hold most dearI
Tells to my fearful breast a tale of sorrowJ
O bright eyed Hope my morbidfancy cheerI
Let me awhile thy sweetest comforts borrowJ
Thy heaven born radiance around me shedC
And wave thy silver pinions o'er my headC
-
Should e'er unhappy love my bosom painK
From cruel parents or relentless fairG
O let me think it is not quite in vainK
To sigh out sonnets to the midnight airG
Sweet Hope ethereal balm upon me shedC
And wave thy silver pinions o'er my headC
-
In the long vista of the years to rollL
Let me not see our country's honour fadeM
O let me see our land retain her soulL
Her pride her freedom and not freedom's shadeM
From thy bright eyes unusual brightness shedC
Beneath thy pinions canopy my headC
-
Let me not see the patriot's high bequestN
Great Liberty how great in plain attireO
With the base purple of a court oppress'dN
Bowing her head and ready to expireP
But let me see thee stoop from heaven on wingsQ
That fill the skies with silver glitteringsQ
-
And as in sparkling majesty a starR
Gilds the bright summit of some gloomy cloudS
Brightening the half veil'd face of heaven afarR
So when dark thoughts my boding spirit shroudS
Sweet Hope celestial influence round me shedC
Waving thy silver pinions o'er my headC
