Ever let the Fancy roamA
Pleasure never is at homeA
At a touch sweet Pleasure meltethB
Like to bubbles when rain peltethB
Then let wing egrave d Fancy wanderC
Through the thought still spread beyond herC
Open wide the mind's cage doorD
She'll dart forth and cloudward soarD
O sweet Fancy let her looseE
Summer's joys are spoilt by useE
And the enjoying of the SpringF
Fades as does its blossomingF
Autumn's red lipp'd fruitage tooG
Blushing through the mist and dewG
Cloys with tasting What do thenH
Sit thee by the ingle whenH
The sear faggot blazes brightI
Spirit of a winter's nightI
When the soundless earth is muffledJ
And the cak egrave d snow is shuffledJ
From the ploughboy's heavy shoonH
When the Night doth meet the NoonH
In a dark conspiracyK
To banish Even from her skyL
Sit thee there and send abroadM
With a mind self overawedM
Fancy high commission'd send herC
She has vassals to attend herC
She will bring in spite of frostM
Beauties that the earth hath lostM
She will bring thee all togetherC
All delights of summer weatherC
All the buds and bells of MayN
From dewy sward or thorny sprayN
All the heap egrave d Autumn's wealthB
With a still mysterious stealthB
She will mix these pleasures upO
Like three fit wines in a cupO
And thou shalt quaff it thou shalt hearP
Distant harvest carols clearQ
Rustle of the reap egrave d cornH
Sweet birds antheming the mornH
And in the same moment harkR
'Tis the early April larkR
Or the rooks with busy cawS
Foraging for sticks and strawS
Thou shalt at one glance beholdM
The daisy and the marigoldM
White plumed lilies and the firstM
Hedge grown primrose that hath burstM
Shaded hyacinth alwayT
Sapphire queen of the mid MayN
And every leaf and every flowerC
Pearl egrave d with the self same showerC
Thou shalt see the fieldmouse peepU
Meagre from its cell egrave d sleepU
And the snake all winter thinH
Cast on sunny bank its skinH
Freckled nest eggs thou shalt seeK
Hatching in the hawthorn treeK
When the hen bird's wing doth restM
Quiet on her mossy nestM
Then the hurry and alarmV
When the beehive casts its swarmW
Acorns ripe down patteringS
While the autumn breezes singS
-
O sweet Fancy let her looseE
Every thing is spoilt by useE
Where 's the cheek that doth not fadeM
Too much gazed at Where 's the maidM
Whose lip mature is ever newH
Where 's the eye however blueH
Doth not weary Where 's the faceX
One would meet in every placeX
Where 's the voice however softM
One would hear so very oftM
At a touch sweet Pleasure meltethB
Like to bubbles when rain peltethB
Let then wing egrave d Fancy findM
Thee a mistress to thy mindM
Dulcet eyed as Ceres' daughterC
Ere the God of Torment taught herC
How to frown and how to chideM
With a waist and with a sideM
White as Hebe's when her zoneH
Slipt its golden clasp and downH
Fell her kirtle to her feetM
While she held the goblet sweetM
And Jove grew languid Break the meshY
Of the Fancy's silken leashZ
Quickly break her prison stringS
And such joys as these she'll bringS
Let the wing egrave d Fancy roamA
Pleasure never is at homeA
