'Man goeth forth' with reckless trustA
Upon his wealth of mindB
As if in self a thing of dustA
Creative skill might findB
He schemes and toils stone wood and oreC
Subject or weapon of His powerD
-
By arch and spire by tower girt heightsE
He would his boast fulfilF
By marble births and mimic lightsE
Yet lacks one secret stillF
Where is the master hand shall giveG
To breathe to move to speak to liveH
-
O take away this shade of mightI
The puny toil of manJ
And let great Nature in my sightI
Unroll her gorgeous planJ
I cannot bear those sullen wallsK
Those eyeless towers those tongueless hallsK
-
Art's labour'd toys of highest nameL
Are nerveless cold and dumbM
And man is fitted but to frameL
A coffin or a tombN
Well suits when sense is pass'd awayO
Such lifeless works the lifeless clayO
-
Here let me sit where wooded hillsP
Skirt yon far reaching plainQ
While cattle bank its winding rillsP
And suns embrown its grainQ
Such prospect is to me right dearR
For freedom health and joy are hereS
-
There is a spirit ranging throughT
The earth the stream the airU
Ten thousand shapes garbs ever newT
That busy One doth wearU
In colour scent and taste and soundV
The energy of Life is foundV
-
The leaves are rustling in the breezeP
The bird renews her songW
From field to brook o'er heath o'er treesP
The sunbeam glides alongW
The insect happy in its hourD
Floats softly by or sips the flowerD
-
Now dewy rain descends and nowX
Brisk showers the welkin shroudY
I care not though with angry browX
Frowns the red thunder cloudY
Let hail storm pelt and lightning harmZ
'Tis Nature's work and has its charmZ
-
Ah lovely Nature others dwellF
Full favour'd in thy courtA2
I of thy smiles but hear them tellF
And feed on their reportA2
Catching what glimpse an Ulcombe yieldsP
To strangers loitering in her fieldsP
-
I go where form has ne'er unbentA2
The sameness of its swayO
Where iron rule stern precedentA2
Mistreat the graceful dayO
To pine as prisoner in his cellF
And yet be thought to love it wellF
-
Yet so His high dispose has setA2
Who binds on each his partA2
Though absent I may cherish yetA2
An Ulcombe of the heartA2
Calm verdant hope divinely givenB2
And suns of peace and scenes of heavenB2
-
A soul prepared His will to meetA2
Full fix'd His work to doA2
Not laboured into sudden heatA2
But inly born anewA2
So living Nature not dull ArtA2
Shall plan my ways and rule my heartA2
