'A
The maiden is not dead but sleepethB
'A
She is not gone still in our sightC
That dearest maid shall liveD
In form as true in tints as brightC
As youth and health could giveE
-
Still still is ours the modest eyeF
The smile unwrought by artG
The glance that shot so piercinglyH
Affection's keenest dartG
-
The thrilling voice I ne'er could hearI
But felt a joy and painJ
A pride that she was ours a fearK
Ours she might not remainJ
-
Whether the page divine call'd forthB
Its clear sweet tranquil toneL
Or cheerful hymn or seemly mirthB
In sprightlier measure shownL
-
The meek inquiry of that faceM
Musing on wonders foundN
As 'mid dim paths she sought to traceM
The truth on sacred groundN
-
The thankful sigh that would ariseO
When aught her doubts removedP
Full sure the explaining voice to prizeO
Admiring while she lovedQ
-
The pensive brow the world might seeR
When she in crowds was foundN
The burst of heart the o'erflowing gleeR
When only friends were roundN
-
Hope's warmth of promise prompt to fillH
The thoughts with good in storeS
Match'd with content's deep stream which stillH
Flow'd on when hope was o'erT
-
That peace which with its own bright dayU
Made cheapest sights shine fairV
That purest grace which track'd its wayU
Safe from aught earthly thereV
-
Such was she in the sudden hourT
That brought her Maker's callH
Proving her heart's self mastering powerT
Blithely to part with allH
-
All her eye loved all her hand press'dW
With keen affection's glowH
The voice of home all pleasures bestW
All dearest thoughts belowH
-
From friend lit hearth from social boardX
All duteously she roseY
For faith upon the Master's wordZ
Can find a sure reposeY
-
And in her wonder up she spedA2
And tried relief in vainJ
Then laid her down upon her bedA2
Of languor and of painJ
-
And waited till the solemn spellH
A ling'ring night and dayU
Should fill its numbers and compelH
Her soul to come awayU
-
Such was she then and such she isB2
Shrined in each mourner's breastW
Such shall she be and more than thisC2
In promised glory blestW
-
When in due lines her Saviour dearK
His scatter'd saints shall rangeD2
And knit in love souls parted hereI
Where cloud is none nor changeD2
