CHAMPION of those who groan beneathA
Oppression's iron handB
In view of penury hate and deathC
I see thee fearless standB
Still bearing up thy lofty browD
In the steadfast strength of truthE
In manhood sealing well the vowD
And promise of thy youthE
Go on for thou hast chosen wellF
On in the strength of GodG
Long as one human heart shall swellF
Beneath the tyrant's rodG
Speak in a slumbering nation's earH
As thou hast ever spokenI
Until the dead in sin shall hearH
The fetter's link be brokenI
I love thee with a brother's loveJ
I feel my pulses thrillK
To mark thy Spirit soar aboveJ
The cloud of human illK
My heart hath leaped to answer thineL
And echo back thy wordsM
As leaps the warrior's at the shineL
And flash of kindred swordsN
They tell me thou art rash and vainO
A searcher after fameP
That thou art striving but to gainO
A long enduring nameP
That thou hast nerved the Afric's handB
And steeled the Afric's heartQ
To shake aloft his vengeful brandB
And rend his chain apartQ
Have I not known thee well and readR
Thy mighty purpose longS
And watched the trials which have madeT
Thy human spirit strongS
And shall the slanderer's demon breathC
Avail with one like meU
To dim the sunshine of my faithV
And earnest trust in theeU
Go on the dagger's point may glareW
Amid thy pathway's gloomX
The fate which sternly threatens thereW
Is glorious martyrdomY
Then onward with a martyr's zealZ
And wait thy sure rewardA2
When man to man no more shall kneelZ
And God alone be LordA2
