The Spaniel And Chameleon Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCD EEFF GGHHII JJAAKKLLMMFFNNEEOP

A spaniel mightily well bredA
Ne'er taught to labour for his breadA
But to play tricks and bear him smartB
To please his lady's eyes and heartB
Who never had the whip for mischiefC
But praises from the damsel his chiefD
-
The wind was soft the morning fairE
They issued forth to take the airE
He ranged the meadows where a greenF
Cameleon green as grass was seenF
-
Halloa you chap who change your coatG
What do you rowing in this boatG
Why have you left the town I sayH
You're wrong to stroll about this wayH
Preferment which your talent crownsI
Believe me friend is found in townsI
-
Friend said the sycophant 'tis trueJ
One time I lived in town like youJ
I was a courtier born and bredA
And kings have bent to me the headA
I knew each lord and lady's passionK
And fostered every vice in fashionK
But Jove was wrath loves not the liarL
He sent me here to cool my fireL
Retained my nature but he shapedM
My form to suit the thing I apedM
And sent me in this shape obsceneF
To batten in a sylvan sceneF
How different is your lot and mineN
Lo how you eat and drink and dineN
Whilst I condemned to thinnest fareE
Like those I flattered feed on airE
Jove punishes what man rewardsO
Pray you accept my best regardsP
