Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EEFFGG HHBBGGII JJKLMM

The setting dog the stubble triedA
And snuffed the breeze with nostrils wideA
He set the sportsmen from behindB
Conscious of game the net unwindB
-
A partridge which as warder stoodC
Warned and the covey sought the woodC
But ere she followed from her coverD
Thus she discharged her mind on RoverD
-
Thou fawning slave and sneaking cheatE
Subservient unto man's deceitE
Disgrace unto thy honest raceF
Unto the race of dogs disgraceF
Who ere to men they bent the kneeG
Were noted for fidelityG
-
The dog retorted with a sneerH
Since you are safe enjoy your jeerH
Rustic alike in kind and mindB
And ignorant of courts refinedB
Sagacious courtiers do like meG
They rise to high supremacyG
I copy them and I inheritI
The high rewards for worth and meritI
-
I might have known the partridge saidJ
The school where you were trained and bredJ
With a smooth brow for every crisisK
Inherent to your master's vicesL
You came from courts return adieuM
And to her covey off she flewM
