The Man And The Flea Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Whether on earth in air or mainA
Sure ev'ry thing alive is vainA
Does not the hawk all fowls surveyB
As destin'd only for his preyB
And do not tyrants prouder thingsC
Think men were born for slaves to kingsC
When the crab views the pearly strandsD
Or Tagus bright with golden sandsD
Or crawls beside the coral groveE
And hears the ocean roll aboveF
'Nature is too profuse ' says heG
'Who gave all these to pleasure me 'H
When bord'ring pinks and roses bloomI
And ev'ry garden breathes perfumeI
When peaches glow with sunny dyesJ
Like Laura's cheek when blushes riseJ
When with huge figs the branches bendK
When clusters from the vine dependK
The snail looks round on flow'r and treeG
And cries 'All these were made for me 'H
'What dignity's in human nature 'H
Says Man the most conceited creatureL
As from a cliff he cast his eyeM
And view'd the sea and arched skyM
The sun was sunk beneath the mainA
The moon and all the starry trainA
Hung the vast vault of heav'n The ManN
His contemplation thus beganN
'When I behold this glorious showO
And the side watry world belowO
The scaly people of the mainA
The beasts that range the wood or plainA
The wing'd inhabitants of airP
The day the night the various yearQ
And know all these by heav'n design'dR
As gifts to pleasure human kindR
I cannot raise my worth too highM
Of what vast consequence am I 'H
'Not of th'importance you suppose 'H
Replies a Flea upon his noseS
'Be humble learn thyself to scanN
Know pride was never made for ManN
'Tis vanity that swells thy mindR
What heav'n and earth for thee design'dR
For thee made only for our needT
That more important Fleas might feed 'H
