The Court Of Death Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC DDEF GGHH IIJJ KK LL MMNN KKOOFEJJPPQQRS

Once on a time in solemn stateA
Death in his pomp of terror sateA
Attendant on his gloomy reignB
Sadness and Madness Woe and PainB
His vassal train With hollow toneC
The tyrant muttered from his throneC
-
We choose a minister to nightD
Let him who wills prefer his rightD
And unto the most worthy handE
We will commit the ebon wandF
-
Fever stood forth And I appealG
To weekly bills to show my zealG
Repelled repulsed I persevereH
Often quotidian through a yearH
-
Gout next appeared to urge his claimI
For the racked joints of tortured frameI
He too besieged the man oppressedJ
Nor would depart although suppressedJ
-
Then Rheumatics stept forth and saidK
I plague them as they lie in bedK
-
Whilst Palsy said I make them stumbleL
When they get up I make them tumbleL
-
Then quick Consumption slow DeclineM
Put in their claims on counts malignM
And Plague preferred his rapid powerN
To weed a nation in an hourN
-
At the first pause the monarch saidK
Merit of modesty was bredK
Does no physician strive with theseO
Physicians are content with feesO
I say give Drunkenness the wandF
There give it to his drunken handE
For wary men as foes detestJ
You Rheumatics who break their restJ
Fever and Gout who here contendP
But Drunkenness they think their friendP
Invite him to their feasts he sharesQ
Alike their merriments and caresQ
He for another magnum callsR
At weddings births and funeralsS
