All in the Downs the fleet was moor'dA
The streamers waving in the windB
When black ey'd Susan came aboardC
Oh where shall I my true love findB
Tell me ye jovial sailors tell me trueD
If my sweet William sails among the crewD
-
William who high upon the yardE
Rock'd with the billow to and froF
Soon as her well known voice he heardG
He sigh'd and cast his eyes belowF
The cord slides swiftly through his glowing handsH
And quick as lightning on the deck he standsH
-
So the sweet lark high pois'd in airI
Shuts close his pinions to his breastJ
If chance his mate's shrill call he hearK
And drops at once into her nestJ
The noblest captain in the British fleetL
Might envy William's lip those kisses sweetL
-
'O Susan Susan lovely dearM
My vows shall ever true remainN
Let me kiss off that falling tearI
We only part to meet againO
Change as ye list ye winds my heart shall beP
The faithful compass that still points to theeP
-
'Believe not what the landmen sayQ
Who tempt with doubts thy constant mindB
They'll tell thee sailors when awayQ
In ev'ry port a mistress findB
Yes yes believe them when they tell thee soF
For thou art present wheresoe'er I goF
-
'If to far India's coast we sailR
Thy eyes are seen in di'monds brightS
Thy breath is Afric's spicy galeR
Thy skin is ivory so whiteS
Thus ev'ry beauteous object that I viewD
Wakes in my soul some charm of lovely SueD
-
'Though battle call me from thy armsT
Let not my pretty Susan mournU
Though cannons roar yet safe from harmsT
William shall to his dear returnV
Love turns aside the balls that round me flyW
Lest precious tears should drop from Susan's eye'X
-
The boatswain gave the dreadful wordG
The sails their swelling bosom spreadY
No longer must she stay aboardC
They kiss'd she sigh'd he hung his headY
Her less'ning boat unwilling rows to landZ
'Adieu' she cries and wav'd her lily handZ
