Shepherd's Dog And Wolf Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDD EF G GHHIIA ABBJJBBCCKK

A hungry wolf had thinned the foldA
Safely he refuged on the woldA
And as in den secure he layB
The thefts of night regaled his dayB
The shepherd's dog who searched the glenC
By chance found the marauder's denC
They fought like Trojan and like GreekD
Till it fell out they both waxed weakD
-
Wolf said the dog the whilst we rest onE
I fain would ask of you a questionF
-
Ask on the wolf replied I'm readyG
-
Wolf said the dog with soul so steadyG
And limbs so strong I wonder muchH
That you our lambs and ewes should touchH
There are the lion and the boarI
To bathe your jaws with worthier goreI
'Tis cowardly to raid the foldA
-
Friend said the wolf I pray thee holdA
Nature framed me a beast of preyB
And I must eat when where I mayB
Now if your bosom burn with zealJ
To help and aid the bleating wealJ
Hence to your lord and master sayB
What you have said to me or stayB
Tell him that I snatch now and thenC
One sheep for thousands gorged by menC
I am their foe and called a curseK
But a pretended friend is worseK
