Philosopher And Pheasant Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEE FGHH IIJJKKLMNNNNNNNNOO

A sage awakened by the dawnA
By music of the groves was drawnA
From tree to tree responsive notesB
Arose from many warbling throatsB
As he advanced the warblers ceasedC
Silent the bird and scared the beastC
The nightingale then ceased her layD
And the scared leveret ran awayD
The sage then pondered and his eyeE
Roamed round to learn the reason whyE
-
He marked a pheasant as she stoodF
Upon a bank above her broodG
With pride maternal beat her breastH
As she harangued and led from nestH
-
Play on my infant brood this glenI
Is free from bad marauding menI
O trust the hawk and trust the kiteJ
Sooner than man detested wightJ
Ingratitude sticks to his mindK
A vice inherent to the kindK
The sheep that clothes him with her woolL
Dies at the shambles butcher's schoolM
The honey bees with waxen combsN
Are slain by hives and hecatombsN
And the sagacious goose who givesN
The plume whereby he writes and livesN
And as a guerdon for its useN
He cuts the quill and eats the gooseN
Avoid the monster where he roamsN
He desolates our raided homesN
And where such acts and deeds are boastedO
I hear we pheasants all are roastedO
