Accept my Prince the moral fableA
To youth ingenuous profitableA
Nobility like beauty's youthB
May seldom hear the voice of truthB
Or mark and learn the fact betimesC
That flattery is the nurse of crimesC
Friendship which seldom nears a throneD
Is by her voice of censure knownD
To one in your exalted stationE
A courtier is a dedicationE
But I dare not to dedicateF
My verse e'en unto royal stateF
My muse is sacred and must teachG
Truths which they slur in courtly speechG
But I need not to hide the praiseC
Or veil the thoughts a nation paysC
We in your youth and virtues traceC
The dawnings of your royal raceC
Discern the promptings of your breastH
Discern you succour the distrestH
Discern your strivings to attainI
The heights above the lowly plainI
Thence shall Nobility inspireJ
Your bosom with her holy fireK
Impressing on your spirit allL
Her glorious and heroicalL
-
-
-
A tigress prowling for her preyM
Assailed a traveller on his wayM
A passing lion thought no shameN
To rob the tigress of her gameN
They fought he conquered in the strifeO
Of him the traveller begged for lifeO
His life the generous lion gaveP
And him invited to his caveP
Arrived they sat and shared the feastH
-
The lion spoke he said What beastH
Is strong enough to fight with meQ
You saw the battle fair and freeQ
My vassals fear me on my throneD
These hills and forests are my ownD
The lesser tribes of wolf and bearR
Regard my royal den with fearS
Their carcases on either handH
And bleaching bones now strew the landH
-
It is so said the man I sawC
What well might baser natures aweT
But shall a monarch like to youU
Place glory in so base a viewU
Robbers invade a neighbour's rightH
But Love and Justice have more mightH
O mean and sordid are the boastsC
Of plundered lands and wasted hostsC
Kings should by love and justice reignI
Nor be like pirates of the mainI
Your clemency to me has shownD
A virtue worthy of a throneD
If Heaven has made you great and strongV
Use not her gifts to do us wrongV
-
The lion answered It is plainI
That I have been abused my reignI
By slaves and sophisters besetH
But tell me friend didst ever yetH
Attend in human courts You seeQ
My courtiers say they rule like meQ
