Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEE FFGH AAII JJKK LLMNOOPPQQ RSTUVWXX

As Jove once on his judgment seatA
Opened the trap door at his feetA
Up flew the murmurs of creationB
Of every brute that had sensationB
The Thunderer therefore called his EagleC
Which came obedient as a beagleC
And him commanded to descendD
And to such murmurs put an endD
The eagle did so citing allE
To answer the imperial callE
-
He spoke Ye murmurers declareF
What are these ills which trouble airF
Just are the universal lawsG
Now let the dog first plead his causeH
-
A beagle answered him How fleetA
The greyhound's course how nerved his feetA
I hunt by scent by scent aloneI
That lost and all my chance has flownI
-
Answered the greyhound If I hadJ
That which he scorns I should be gladJ
Had I the hound's sagacious scentK
I ne'er had murmured discontentK
-
The lion murmured he had notL
Sly Reynard's wits to lay a plotL
Sly Reynard pleaded that to aweM
He should possess the lion's pawN
The cock desired the heron's flightO
The heron wished for greater mightO
And fish would feed upon the plainP
And beasts would refuge in the mainP
None their ambitious wish could smotherQ
And each was envious of anotherQ
-
The eagle answered MutineersR
The god rejects your idle prayersS
But any may exchange who wishesT
And chop and change birds beasts and fishesU
The eagle paused but none consentedV
To quit the race they representedW
And recognised the restless mindX
And proud ambition of mankindX
