The traveller whose undaunted soulA
Sails o'er the seas from pole to poleA
Sees many wonders which becomeB
So wonderful they strike one dumbB
When we in their description viewC
Monsters which Adam never knewC
Yet on the other hand the scepticD
Supplies his moral antisepticD
Denying unto truths beliefE
With groans which give his ears reliefE
But truth is stranger far than fictionF
And outlives sceptic contradictionF
Read Pliny or old AldrovandusG
If they would say you understand usG
Let other monsters stand avauntH
And read we of the elephantH
-
As one of these in days of yoreI
Rummaged a stall of antique loreI
Of parchment rolls not modern bindingD
He found a roll the which unwindingD
He saw all birds and beasts portrayedH
Which Nature's bounteous hand had madeH
With forms and sentiments to witH
All by the hand of man down writH
The elephant with great attentionF
Remarked upon that great inventionF
-
Man is endowed with reason beastsG
Allowed their instinct that at leastH
But here's an author owning neitherJ
No reason and no instinct eitherJ
He thinks he has all natures knownK
And yet he does not know his ownK
Now here's the spaniel who is drawnL
The master spirit sprung to fawnL
Pooh pooh a courtier in his callingD
Must fawn more deeply for enthrallingD
Now there's the fox his attributeH
To plunder as we say 'to loot '-
Pooh pooh a lawyer at that viceG
Would outfox Reynard in a triceG
Then come the wolf and tiger's broodH
He bans them for their gust of bloodH
Pooh pooh he bloodier is than theyM
They slay for hunger he for payM
-
A publisher who heard him speakD
And saw him read Parsee and GreekD
Thought he had found a prize Dear sirJ
If you against mankind will stirJ
And write upon the wrongs of SiamN
No man is better pay than I amN
Or since 'tis plain that you know true GreekD
To make an onslaught on the rubrickD
-
Twisting his trunk up like a wipsyG
Friend said the elephant you're tipsyG
Put up your purse again be wiseG
Leave man mankind to criticiseG
Be sure you ne'er will lack a penO
Amidst the bustling sons of menO
For like to game cocks and such cattleP
Authors run unprovoked to battleP
And never cease to fight and fray themQ
Whilst there's a publisher to pay themQ
