Council Of Horses Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABC DDEEFFGHIIJJKKLL MM DDNNOOPPQQRSTTUUGGVV WW

A steed with mutiny inspiredA
The stud which grazed the mead and firedA
A colt whose eyes then blazing fireB
Stood forth and thus expressed his ireC
-
How abject is the equine raceD
Condemned to slavery's disgraceD
Consider friends the deep reproachE
Harnessed to drag the gilded coachE
To drag the plough to trot the roadF
To groan beneath the pack horse loadF
Whom do we serve a two legged manG
Of feeble frame of visage wanH
What must our noble jaws submitI
To champ and foam their galling bitI
He back and spur me Let him firstJ
Control the lion tiger's thirstJ
I here avow that I disdainK
His might that I reject his reignK
He freedom claims and why not weL
The nag that wills it must be freeL
-
He paused the intervening pauseM
Was followed by some horse applauseM
-
An ancient Nestor of the raceD
Advanced with sober solemn paceD
With age and long experience wiseN
He cast around his thoughtful eyesN
He said I was with strength enduedO
And knew the tasks of servitudeO
Now I am old and now these plainsP
And grateful man repay my painsP
I ofttimes marvelled to think howQ
He knew the times to reap and ploughQ
And to his horses gave a shareR
Of the fair produce of the yearS
He built the stable stored the hayT
And winnowed oats from day to dayT
Since every creature is decreedU
To aid his brother in his needU
We served each other horse and manG
And carried out the Eternal planG
And each performed his part assignedV
Then calm your discontented mindV
-
The Nestor spoke the colt submittedW
And like his ancestry was bittedW
