A Tale of the TalmudA
-
-
When Solomon was reigning in his gloryB
Unto his throne the Queen of Sheba cameC
So in the Talmud you may read the storyB
Drawn by the magic of the monarch's fameC
To see the splendors of his court and bringD
Some fitting tribute to the mighty kingD
-
Nor this alone much had her Highness heardE
What flowers of learning graced the royal speechF
What gems of wisdom dropped with every wordE
What wholesome lessons he was wont to teachF
In pleasing proverbs and she wished in soothG
To know if Rumor spoke the simple truthG
-
Besides the queen had heard which piqued her mostH
How through the deepest riddles he could spyI
How all the curious arts that women boastH
Were quite transparent to his piercing eyeI
And so the queen had come a royal guestJ
To put the sage's cunning to the testJ
-
And straight she held before the monarch's viewK
In either hand a radiant wreath of flowersL
The one bedecked with every charming hueK
Was newly culled from Nature's choicest bowersL
The other no less fair in every partM
Was the rare product of divinest ArtM
-
Which is the true and which the false she saidN
Great Solomon was silent All amazedO
Each wondering courtier shook his puzzled headN
While at the garlands long the monarch gazedO
As one who sees a miracle and fainP
For very rapture ne'er would speak againQ
-
Which is the true once more the woman askedR
Pleased at the fond amazement of the kingD
So wise a head should not be hardly taskedR
Most learned liege with such a trivial thingD
But still the sage was silent it was plainP
A deepening doubt perplexed the royal brainP
-
While thus he pondered presently he seesS
Hard by the casement so the story goesT
A little band of busy bustling beesS
Hunting for honey in a withered roseT
The monarch smiled and raised his royal headN
Open the window that was all he saidN
-
The window opened at the king's commandU
Within the room the eager insects flewK
And sought the flowers in Sheba's dexter handU
And so the king and all the courtiers knewK
That wreath was Nature's and the baffled queenV
Returned to tell the wonders she had seenV
-
My story teaches every tale should bearW
A fitting moral that the wise may findX
In trifles light as atoms in the airW
Some useful lesson to enrich the mindX
Some truth designed to profit or to pleaseS
As Israel's king learned wisdom from the beesS
