Thy Hill Leave Not Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCBCADEAE FGFGHH IIJJKK KLLMMGGNOAAIIPAPJQJQ JJRRQKKSBKKThy hill leave not O Spring | A |
Nor longer leap down to the new green'd Plain | B |
Thy western cliff caves keep | C |
O Wind nor branch borne Echo after thee complain | B |
With grumbling wild and deep | C |
Let Blossom cling | A |
Sudden and frozen round the eyes of trees | D |
Nor fall nor fall | E |
Be still each Wing | A |
Hushed each call | E |
- | |
So was it ordered so | F |
Hung all things silent still | G |
Only Time earless moved on stepping slow | F |
Up the scarped hill | G |
And even Time in a long twilight stayed | H |
And for a whim that whispered whim obeyed | H |
- | |
There was no breath no sigh | I |
No wind lost in the sky | I |
Roamed the horizon round | J |
The harsh dead leaf slept noiseless on the ground | J |
By unseen mouse nor insect stirred | K |
Nor beak of hungry bird | K |
- | |
Then were voices heard | K |
Mingling as though each | L |
Earth and grass had individual speech | L |
Has evening fallen so soon | M |
And yet no Moon | M |
No but hark so still | G |
Was never the Spring's voice adown the hill | G |
I do not feel her waters tapping upon | N |
The culvert's under stone | O |
And if 'tis not yet night a thrush should sing | A |
Or if 'tis night the owl should his far echo bring | A |
Near near And I | I |
Should know the hour by his long shaking distant cry | I |
But how should echo be The air is dead | P |
No song no wing | A |
No footfall overhead | P |
Of beast Or labourer passing and no sound | J |
Of labourer's Good night good night good night | Q |
That we here underground | J |
Take to ourselves and breathe unheard Good night | Q |
O it is lonely now with not one sound | J |
Neath that arched profound | J |
No throttled note | R |
Sweet over us to float | R |
No shadow treading light | Q |
Of man beast bird | K |
If earth in dumb earth lie we here unstirred | K |
Why brother it were death renewed again | S |
If sun nor rain | B |
O death undying if no dear human touch nor sound | K |
Fall on us underground | K |
