If thou hast griefA
And passion vex the spirit that is in theeB
-
There was a stony beachC
Where the heat flickered and the little wavesD
Whispered each to eachC
Dove coloured was that stony beachC
And white birds hungering hovered overE
The shining wavesD
And men had kindled thereF
A great fierce heap of golden flameG
Spoiled grasses with dead buttercups and pale cloverE
The agonising flameG
Yearned in its vitals towards the quiet airF
And died in a little smokeH
And on the coloured beach the black warm ashI
RemainedJ
-
Then on that warm ashI
Another heap of grasses was outpouredJ
And instant cameG
Another knot of struggling yellow smokeH
That burst into new agonies of flameG
Dying into a drift of smokeH
And on the coloured beach the black cold ashI
RemainedJ
-
Or is thy grief too deepK
Passion too dear the spirit in thee asleepK
-
Twelve deep and sombre stillL
Expectant hushedJ
The miles long crowd stood and then listeningM
The nervous drumsN
The unendurable low reedsO
Silence and then the nearing drumsN
Again again the thrilling reedsO
And thenP
The deep crowd hushedJ
Following an almightier KingM
That rode unseenQ
Drew near the tributary magnificenceO
Hushed hushedJ
The deep crowd stood devouring listeningM
But a child on his father's shoulder criedJ
Hurrah hurrahR
-
Only have thou no fearS
Pride but no fearS
