And passion vex the spirit that is in thee | B |
- | |
There was a stony beach | C |
Where the heat flickered and the little waves | D |
Whispered each to each | C |
Dove coloured was that stony beach | C |
And white birds hungering hovered over | E |
The shining waves | D |
And men had kindled there | F |
A great fierce heap of golden flame | G |
Spoiled grasses with dead buttercups and pale clover | E |
The agonising flame | G |
Yearned in its vitals towards the quiet air | F |
And died in a little smoke | H |
And on the coloured beach the black warm ash | I |
Remained | J |
- | |
Then on that warm ash | I |
Another heap of grasses was outpoured | J |
And instant came | G |
Another knot of struggling yellow smoke | H |
That burst into new agonies of flame | G |
Dying into a drift of smoke | H |
And on the coloured beach the black cold ash | I |
Remained | J |
- | |
Or is thy grief too deep | K |
Passion too dear the spirit in thee asleep | K |
- | |
Twelve deep and sombre still | L |
Expectant hushed | J |
The miles long crowd stood and then listening | M |
The nervous drums | N |
The unendurable low reeds | O |
Silence and then the nearing drums | N |
Again again the thrilling reeds | O |
And then | P |
The deep crowd hushed | J |
Following an almightier King | M |
That rode unseen | Q |
Drew near the tributary magnificence | O |
Hushed hushed | J |
The deep crowd stood devouring listening | M |
But a child on his father's shoulder cried | J |
Hurrah hurrah | R |
- | |
Only have thou no fear | S |
Pride but no fear | S |
