Formed in darkness grown in light | B |
Are they the substance of delight | B |

In these strong lovely presences | D |
In cheeks of children thews of men | E |
Women's bodies beloved of men | E |
Who could have dreamed a thing so wise | F |
As that clear look of the child's eyes | F |
Who the thin texture of her hand | G |
But with a hand's touch understand | G |
Shaped in eternity were these | C |
Body's miracles where the seas | C |
Their continuous rhythm learned | H |
And the stars in their bright order burned | H |
From stars and seas was motion caught | I |
When flesh blood bone and skin were wrought | J |
Into swift lovely liveliness | K |
Oh but beauty less and less | L |
Than beauty grows The cheeks fall in | A |
Colour dies from the smooth skin | A |
And muscles slack and bones are brittle | M |
Veins and arteries little by little | M |
Delay the tides of the blood | N |
That is a ditch that was a flood | N |
Then all but dry bones disappears | O |
White bones that lie a hundred years | O |
Cheated of resurrection | P |
Where is that beauty gone | Q |
Escaped even while we watched it so | R |
And none guessed the way it would go | R |
Only it's fled and here alone | S |
Lie blood and skin and flesh and bone | S |
Where is the beauty that was here | T |
