Long ago some builder thrustB
Heavenward in Southampton townC
His spire and beamed his bellsD
Largely conceiving from the dustB
That pinnacle for ringing downC
Orisons and No lsE
-
In his imagination rangF
Through generations challengingG
His peal on simple menH
Who as the heart within him sangF
In daily townfaring should singG
By year and year againH

Now often to their ringing goI
The bellmen with lean Time at heelJ
Intent on daily caresK
The bells ring high the bells ring lowI
The ringers ring the builder's pealJ
Of tidings unawaresK
-
And all the bells might well be dumbL
For any quickening in the streetM
Of customary earsN
And so at last proud builders comeL
With dreams and virtues to defeatM
Among the clouding yearsN

Now waiting on Southampton seaO
For exile through the silver nightP
I hear No l No lQ
Through generations down to meO
Your challenge builder comes arightP
Bell by obedient bellQ
-
You wake an hour with me then wideP
Though be the lapses of your sleepR
You yet shall wake againH
And thus old builder on the tideP
Of immortality you keepR
Your way from brain to brainS
