Elegy V: His Picture Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFGHHIIDDJJ

Here take my picture though I bid farewellA
Thine in my heart where my soul dwells shall dwellA
'Tis like me now but I dead 'twill be moreB
When we are shadows both than 'twas beforeB
When weather beaten I come back my handC
Perhaps with rude oars torn or sunbeams tannedC
My face and breast of haircloth and my headD
With cares rash sudden storms being o'erspreadD
My body a sack of bones broken withinE
And powder's blue stains scattered on my skinE
If rival fools tax thee t' have loved a manF
So foul and course as Oh I may seem thenG
This shall say what I was and thou shalt sayH
Do his hurts reach me doth my worth decayH
Or do they reach his judging mind that heI
Should now love less what he did love to seeI
That which in him was fair and delicateD
Was but the milk which in love's childish stateD
Did nurse it who now is grown strong enoughJ
To feed on that which to disused tastes seems toughJ
