In this house she said in this high second storeyA
In this room where we sit above the midnight streetB
There runs a rivulet narrow but very rapidC
Under the still floor and your unconscious feetB
-
The lamp on the table made a cone of lightD
That spread to the base of the walls above was in gloomE
I heard her words with surprise had I worked here so longF
And never divined that secret of the roomE
-
But how I asked does the water climb so highG
I do not know she said but the thing is thereH
Pull up the boards while I go and fetch you a rodI
She passed and I heard her creaking descend the stairH
-
And I rose and rolled the Turkey carpet backJ
From the two broad boards by the north wall she had namedK
And hearing already the crumple of water I kneltL
And lifted the first of them up and the water gleamedM
-
Bordered with little frosted heaps of iceN
And as she came back with a rod and line that swungO
I moved the other board in the yellow lightD
The water trickled frostily slackly alongF
-
I took the tackle a stiff black rubber wormP
That stuck out its pointed tail from a cumbrous hookQ
But there can't be fishing in water like this I saidR
And she with weariness There is no ice there LookQ
-
And I stood there gazing down at a stream in spateS
Holding the rod in my undecided handT
Till it all in a moment grew smooth and still and clearU
And along its deep bottom of slaty grey sandT
-
Three scattered little trout as black as tadpolesV
Came waggling slowly along the glass dark lakeW
And I swung my arm to drop my pointing worm inX
And then I stopped again with a little shakeW
-
For I heard the thin gnat like voices of the troutY
My body felt woolly and sick and astray and coldZ
Crying with mockery in them You are not allowedA2
To take us you know under ten years oldZ
-
And the room swam the calm woman and the yellow lampB2
The table and the dim glistering walls and the floorC2
And the stream sank away and all whirled dizzilyD2
And I moaned and the pain at my heart grew more and moreC2
-
And I fainted away utterly miserableD2
Falling in a place where there was nothing to passE2
Knowing all sorrows and the mothers and sisters of sorrowsF2
And the pain of the darkness before anything ever wasG2
