| When the clouds hide the sun away | B |
| The tall slate roof is dull and grey | B |
| And when the rain adown it streams | C |
| 'Tis polished lead with pale blue gleams | C |
| - | |
| When the clouds vanish and the rain | D |
| Stops and the sun comes out again | E |
| It shimmers golden in the sun | F |
| Almost too bright to look upon | G |

| But soon beneath the steady rays | H |
| The roof is dried and reft of blaze | H |
| 'Tis dusty yellow traversed through | I |
| By long thin lines of deepest blue | I |

| Then at the last as night draws near | J |
| The lines grow faint and disappear | J |
| The roof becomes a purple mist | K |
| A great square darkening amethyst | K |

| Which sinks into the gathering shade | L |
| Till separate form and colour fade | L |
| And it is but a patch which mars | M |
| The beauty of a field of stars | M |

| It stands so lonely in the sky | A |
| The sparrows never come thereby | A |
| The glossy starlings seldom stop | N |
| To preen and chatter on the top | N |
| - | |
| For a whole week sometimes up there | O |
| No wing wave stirs the quiet air | O |
| The roof lies silent and serene | P |
| As though no life had ever been | Q |
| - | |
| Till some bright afternoon athwart | R |
| The edge two sudden shadows dart | S |
| And two white pigeons with pink feet | T |
| Flutter above and pitch on it | U |
| - | |
| Jerking their necks out as they walk | V |
| They talk awhile their pigeon talk | V |
| A low continuous murmur blent | U |
| Of mock reproaches and content | U |
| - | |
| Then cease and sit there warm and white | U |
| An hour till in the fading light | U |
| They wake and know the close of day | U |
| Flutter above and fly away | U |
| - | |
| Leaving the roof whereon they sat | U |
| As 'twas before a peaceful flat | U |
| Expanse as silent and serene | P |
| As though no life had ever been | Q |
