IA
-
When the clouds hide the sun awayB
The tall slate roof is dull and greyB
And when the rain adown it streamsC
'Tis polished lead with pale blue gleamsC
-
When the clouds vanish and the rainD
Stops and the sun comes out againE
It shimmers golden in the sunF
Almost too bright to look uponG
-
But soon beneath the steady raysH
The roof is dried and reft of blazeH
'Tis dusty yellow traversed throughI
By long thin lines of deepest blueI
-
Then at the last as night draws nearJ
The lines grow faint and disappearJ
The roof becomes a purple mistK
A great square darkening amethystK
-
Which sinks into the gathering shadeL
Till separate form and colour fadeL
And it is but a patch which marsM
The beauty of a field of starsM
-

IIA
-
It stands so lonely in the skyA
The sparrows never come therebyA
The glossy starlings seldom stopN
To preen and chatter on the topN
-
For a whole week sometimes up thereO
No wing wave stirs the quiet airO
The roof lies silent and sereneP
As though no life had ever beenQ
-
Till some bright afternoon athwartR
The edge two sudden shadows dartS
And two white pigeons with pink feetT
Flutter above and pitch on itU
-
Jerking their necks out as they walkV
They talk awhile their pigeon talkV
A low continuous murmur blentU
Of mock reproaches and contentU
-
Then cease and sit there warm and whiteU
An hour till in the fading lightU
They wake and know the close of dayU
Flutter above and fly awayU
-
Leaving the roof whereon they satU
As 'twas before a peaceful flatU
Expanse as silent and sereneP
As though no life had ever beenQ
