Rhyme Scheme: AABB CDEE FFGG AAHH IIJJLast night I lay in an open field | A |
And looked at the stars with lips sealed | A |
No noise moved the windless air | B |
And I looked at the stars with steady stare | B |
- | |
There were some that glittered and some that shone | C |
With a soft and equal glow and one | D |
That queened it over the sprinkled round | E |
Swaying the host with silent sound | E |
- | |
Calm things I thought in your cavern blue | F |
I will learn and hold and master you | F |
I will yoke and scorn you as I can | G |
For the pride of my heart is the pride of a man | G |
- | |
Grass to my cheek in the dewy field | A |
I lay quite still with lips sealed | A |
And the pride of a man and his rigid gaze | H |
Stalked like swords on heaven's ways | H |
- | |
But through a sudden gate there stole | I |
The Universe and spread in my soul | I |
Quick went my breath and quick my heart | J |
And I looked at the stars with lips apart | J |
