A Generation (1917) Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCD EFGD BHIJ KHLJ MNOP QNOP

There was a time that's goneA
And will not come againB
We knew it was a pleasant timeC
How good we never dreamedD
-
When for a whimsy's sakeE
We'd even play with painF
For everything awaited usG
And life immortal seemedD
-
It seemed unending thenB
To forward looking eyesH
No thought of what postponement meantI
Hung dark across our mirthJ
-
We had years and strength enoughK
For any enterpriseH
Our numerous companionshipL
Were heirs to all the earthJ
-
But now all memoryM
Is one ironic truthN
We look like strangers at the boysO
We were so long agoP
-
For half of us are deadQ
And half have lost their youthN
And our hearts are scarred by many griefsO
That only age should knowP
