I MORNINGA
-
The village fades awayB
Where I last night cameC
Where they housed me and fed meD
And never asked my nameC
-
The sun shines bright my step is lightE
I who have no abodeF
Jeer at the stuck monotonousG
Black posts along the roadF
-
-
II MIDDAYB
-
The wood is stillH
As here I sitI
My heart drinks inJ
The peace of itI
-
A something stirsK
I know not whereL
Some quiet spiritM
In the airL
-
O tall straight stemsN
O cool deep greenO
O hand unfeltM
O face unseenO
-
-
III EVENINGA
-
The evening closes inJ
As down this last long laneP
I plod there patter roundM
First heavy drops of rainP
-
Feet ache legs ache but nowQ
Step quickens as I thinkR
Of mounds of bread and cheeseS
And something hot to drinkR
-
-
IV NIGHTM
-
Ah sleep is sweet but yetM
I will not sleep awhileT
Nor for a space forgetM
The toil of that last mileT
-
But lie awake and feelU
The cool sheets' tremulous kissesV
O'er all my body stealU
Is sleep as sweet as this isW
