To Melvin Gardner: Suicide Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCCD EDEDFFFD GDGDHHHD

A flight of doves with wanton wingsA
Flash white against the skyB
In the leafy copse an oriole singsA
And a robin sings hard byB
Sun and shadow are out on the hillsC
The swallow has followed the daffodilsC
In leaf and blade life throbs and thrillsC
Through the wild warm heart of MayD
-
To have seen the sun come back to have seenE
Children again at playD
To have heard the thrush where the woods are greenE
Welcome the new born dayD
To have felt the soft grass cool to the feetF
To have smelt earth's incense heavenly sweetF
To have shared the laughter along the streetF
And then to have died in MayD
-
A thousand roses will blossom redG
A thousand hearts be gayD
For the summer lingers just aheadG
And June is on her wayD
The bee must bestir him to fill his cellsH
The moon and the stars will weave new spellsH
Of love and the music of marriage bellsH
And oh to be dead in MayD
