The thought of old dear things is in thine eyesA
O month of memoriesB
Musing on days thine heart hath sorrow ofC
Old joy dead hope dear loveC
-
I see thee stand where all thy sisters meetD
To cast down at thy feetD
The garnered largess of the fruitful yearE
And on thy cheek a tearF
-
Thy glory flames in every blade and leafG
To blind the eyes of griefG
Thy vineyards and thine orchards bend with fruitH
That sorrow may be muteH
-
A hectic splendor lights thy days to sleepI
Ere the gray dusk may creepI
Sober and sad along thy dusty waysJ
Like a lone nun who praysJ
-
High and faint heard thy passing migrant callsK
Thy lazy lizard sprawlsK
On his gray stone and many slow winds creepI
About thy hedge asleepI
-
The sun swings farther toward his love the southL
To kiss her glowing mouthL
And Death who steals among thy purpling bowersM
Is deeply hid in flowersM
-
Would that thy streams were Lethe and might flowN
Where lotus blossoms blowN
And all the sweets wherewith thy riches blessO
Might hold no bitternessP
-
Would in thy beauty we might all forgetQ
Dead days and old regretQ
And through thy realm might fare us forth to roamR
Having no thought for homeR
-
And yet I feel beneath thy queen's attireS
Woven of blood and fireS
Beneath the golden glory of thy charmT
Thy mother heart beats warmU
-
And if mayhap a wandering child of theeV
Weary of land and seaV
Should turn him homeward from his dreamer's questW
To sob upon thy breastW
-
Thine arm would fold him tenderly to proveX
How thine eyes brimmed with loveC
And thy dear hand with all a mother's careF
Would rest upon his hairF
