October Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCC DDEF GGHH IIJJ KKII LLMM NNOP QQRR SSTU VVWW XCFFThe thought of old dear things is in thine eyes | A |
O month of memories | B |
Musing on days thine heart hath sorrow of | C |
Old joy dead hope dear love | C |
- | |
I see thee stand where all thy sisters meet | D |
To cast down at thy feet | D |
The garnered largess of the fruitful year | E |
And on thy cheek a tear | F |
- | |
Thy glory flames in every blade and leaf | G |
To blind the eyes of grief | G |
Thy vineyards and thine orchards bend with fruit | H |
That sorrow may be mute | H |
- | |
A hectic splendor lights thy days to sleep | I |
Ere the gray dusk may creep | I |
Sober and sad along thy dusty ways | J |
Like a lone nun who prays | J |
- | |
High and faint heard thy passing migrant calls | K |
Thy lazy lizard sprawls | K |
On his gray stone and many slow winds creep | I |
About thy hedge asleep | I |
- | |
The sun swings farther toward his love the south | L |
To kiss her glowing mouth | L |
And Death who steals among thy purpling bowers | M |
Is deeply hid in flowers | M |
- | |
Would that thy streams were Lethe and might flow | N |
Where lotus blossoms blow | N |
And all the sweets wherewith thy riches bless | O |
Might hold no bitterness | P |
- | |
Would in thy beauty we might all forget | Q |
Dead days and old regret | Q |
And through thy realm might fare us forth to roam | R |
Having no thought for home | R |
- | |
And yet I feel beneath thy queen's attire | S |
Woven of blood and fire | S |
Beneath the golden glory of thy charm | T |
Thy mother heart beats warm | U |
- | |
And if mayhap a wandering child of thee | V |
Weary of land and sea | V |
Should turn him homeward from his dreamer's quest | W |
To sob upon thy breast | W |
- | |
Thine arm would fold him tenderly to prove | X |
How thine eyes brimmed with love | C |
And thy dear hand with all a mother's care | F |
Would rest upon his hair | F |
