M. W. Ransom Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCDC EFGF FHFH IJIJ FKFK

Died OctoberA
-
-
For him who in a hundred battles stoodB
Scorning the cannon's mouthC
Grimy with flame and red with foeman's bloodD
For thy sweet sake O SouthC
-
Who wise as brave yielded his conquered swordE
At a vain war's surceaseF
And spoke thy champion still the statesman's wordG
In the calm halls of peaceF
-
Who pressed the ruddy wine to thy faint lipsF
Where thy torn body layH
And saw afar time's white in sailing shipsF
Bringing a happier dayH
-
Oh mourn for him dear land that gave him birthI
Bow low thy sorrowing headJ
Let thy seared leaves fall silent on the earthI
Whereunder he lies deadJ
-
In field and hall in valor and in graceF
In wisdom's liveryK
Gentle and brave he moved with knightly paceF
A worthy son of theeK
