'T will not be long before they hearA
The bullbat on the hillB
And in the valley through the duskC
The pastoral whippoorwillB
A few more friendly suns will callB
The bluets through the loamD
And star the lanes with buttercupsE
Away down homeD
-
Knee deep from reedy placesF
Will sing the river frogsG
The terrapins will sun themselvesH
On all the jutting logsI
The angler's cautious oar will leaveJ
A trail of drifting foamD
Along the shady currentsK
Away down homeD
-
The mocking bird will feel againL
The glory of his wingsM
And wanton through the balmy airN
And sunshine while he singsM
With a new cadence in his callB
The glint wing'd crow will roamD
From field to newly furrowed fieldO
Away down homeD
-
When dogwood blossoms mingleB
With the maple's modest redP
And sweet arbutus wakes at lastQ
From out her winter's bedP
'T would not seem strange at all to meetR
A dryad or a gnomeD
Or Pan or Psyche in the woodsS
Away down homeD
-
Then come with me thou weary heartT
Forget thy brooding illsU
Since God has come to walk amongV
His valleys and his hillsU
The mart will never miss theeW
Nor the scholar's dusty tomeD
And the Mother waits to bless theeW
Away down homeD
