Awake my Muse awake each slumb'ring stringA
And mighty subject of a Mushroom singA
Fair to the eye and pleasant to the tasteB
Charm'd by the note a pigmy group in hasteB
Lay down their grainy loads as slow they moveC
Thro' lanes of reed and grass to them a groveD
As if an Orpheus thou they gather roundE
Erect their tiny ears and drink the soundE
Gray was the sky save where the eastern rayF
O'er fragrant hills proclaim'd th' approaching dayF
Rurilla loveliest virgin of the plainG
With spirits light and mind without a stainG
Rose from her simple bed refresh'd with restH
Ah Sleep with marble finger had'st thou prestH
Her lovely eyelids till a later hourI
And by a blissful vision's fairy pow'rJ
Hadst thou impress'd her mind with forms of loveK
The walk at eve the kiss the murm'ring doveK
The little nymph had never sought the plainG
Nor fill'd with one romantic thought this brainG
In russet gown with sweet and simple airL
She issued forth like Hebe young and fairL
To neighb'ring field fresh as the rosy dawnM
Nor stile oppos'd her like a bounding fawnM
Graceful she sprang so prankish was the airL
Had but the love sick Daphanel been thereL
He would have sigh'd alas poor love sick foolN
Thou rather Zephyr dost inflame than coolN
And now my Muse the fatal spot discloseO
Where bath'd with dew the modest Mushroom roseO
Less fair the swan by Richmond's flow'ry sideP
That in the river views herself with prideP
As gazing on her some their stay prolongQ
To see her sail in majesty alongQ
Ill fated child of earth thy charms so fairL
As oft with youthful beauty prove thy snareL
Now as with dewy spangled feet is seenR
The lovely maid to trace each ringlet greenR
Not distant far thy skin of velvet whiteS
She views and to thee presses with delightS
Oh might some deity with potent armT
Arrest her flight and alter ev'ry charmT
Like Niobe dissolve into a tearL
Or like the Delian virgin when with fearU
She fled See on each beauteous limb appearU
Soft leaves and flow'rs the sweetest of the yearU
And taking root spread round her fragrant breathV
O'er the fair form that now she dooms to deathV
But ah in vain the pray'r no goddess hearsW
She bends she plucks and bath'd in purple tearsX
The much priz'd victim in her lap she bearsX
Tears that preserv'd in crystal will prolongQ
And paint its worth beyond this simple songQ
