From Mirth's bright circle from the giddy throngA
How sweet it is to steal away at eveB
To listen to the homeward fisher's songA
Whilst dark the waters of the ocean heaveB
-
And on the sloping beach to bear the sprayC
Dash 'gainst some hoary vessel's broken sideD
Whilst far illumin'd by the parting rayC
The distant sail is faintly seen to glideD
-
Yes 'tis Reflection's chosen hour for thenE
With pensive pleasure mingling o'er the sceneF
Th' erratic mind treads over life againE
And gazes on the past with eye sereneF
-
Those stormy passions which bedimm'd the soulG
That oft have bid the joys it treasur'd flyH
Now like th' unruffled waves of Ocean rollG
With gentle lapse their only sound a sighH
-
The galling wrong no longer knits the browI
Ambition feels the folly of her aimJ
And Pity from the heart expanding nowI
Pants to extend relief to ev'ry claimJ
-
Thus as I sit beside the murm'ring seaK
And o'er its darkness trace light's parting streakL
I feel O Nature that serenityK
Which vainly poetry like mine can speakL
-
O'er the drear tract of Time Remembrance viewsM
Some dear some long departed pleasure gleamN
So o'er the dark expanse the eye pursuesM
Upon the wat'ry edge a transient beamN
-
The spot fraternal love has sacred madeO
Solemn yet sweet like groves in twilight gloomP
Mem'ry revisits and beneath its shadeO
Faintly it sees each faded joy re bloomP
-
By Fancy led from Death's cold bed of stoneQ
Lovely tho' wan what cherish'd form appearsR
Oh gentle Anna A at thy name aloneQ
Genius and Grace and Virtue smile in tearsS
-
Half wrapp'd in mist I see thy figure moveT
O'er thy pale cheek appears its wonted smileU
With lunar lustre beam those looks of loveV
That once could life of ev'ry care beguileU
-
Faintly I hear thy angel voice againE
There's music in the sweet and dying soundW
Like Philomela's soft and echo'd strainX
It spreads a soothing consolation roundW
-
Adieu bless'd shade Imagination rovesS
To distant regions o'er th' Atlantic waveY
Ah not to genial skies or fragrant grovesS
To drop a tear upon a kindred graveY
-
Hard was thy fate Eliza B It was thineZ
Tho' wit thy mind tho' beauty grac'd thy formA2
Behind Affliction's weeping cloud to shineZ
With star like radiance in a night of stormA2
-
Fierce from the sun the fiery fever flewB2
And bade the burning sand become thy tombP
O'er thee no willow drops its mourning dewB2
Nor spotless lilies o'er thy bosom bloomP
-
Oh when we stood around our brother's bierC2
And wept in life's full bloom to see him tornD2
Ah little did ye think that such a tearE2
As then ye shed so soon your fate would mournD2
-
Farewell dear shades accept this mournful songA
At once the tribute of my grief and loveV
Fain would it try your virtues to prolongA
Here priz'd and honour'd and now bless'd aboveV
