manibus date lilia plenisA
Purpureos spargam floresA
-
Aeneid lib viB

-
Tho' no funereal grandeur swell my songC
Nor genius eagle plum'd the strain prolongC
Tho' Grief and Nature here alone combineD
To weep my William o'er a fate like thineD
Yet thy fond pray'r still ling'ring on my earE
Shall force its way thro' many a gushing tearF
The Muse that saw thy op'ning beauties spreadG
That lov'd thee living shall lament thee deadG
Ye graceful Virtues while the note I breatheH
Of sweetest flow'rs entwine a fun'ral wreathI
Of virgin flow'rs and place them round his tombJ
To bud like him and perish in their bloomJ
Ah when these eyes saw thee serenely waitK
The last long separating stroke of FateK
When round thy bed a kindred weeping trainL
Call'd on thy voice to greet them but in vainL
When o'er thy lips we watch'd thy fault'ring breathM
When louder grief proclaim'd th'approach of deathM
Thro' ev'ry vein an icy horror chill'dN
Colder than marble ev'ry bosom thrill'dN
Unsettled still tho' exercis'd to grieveO
Scarce would my mind the alter'd sight believeO
Familiar scenes a transient calm inspireP
Poor flutt'ring Fancy fann'd the vain desireQ
'Till with sad proof thy wasted relics riseA
And restless Nature pours uncall'd for sighsA
Ah long my William shall thy picture restR
Time shall not wear it imag'd in my breastR
Yes thou shall live while fond remembrance livesA
'Till he who mourns thee asks the line he givesA
No common joy no fugitive delightS
Regret like this could in my breast exciteS
For then my sorrow had been less severeT
And tears less copious had bedew'd the bierE
From the same breast our milky food we drewU
Entwin'd affection strengthen'd as we grewU
Why further trace The flatt'ring dream is o'erQ
Thy transient joys and sorrows are no moreV
All all are fled And ah where'er I turnW
Insulting Death directs me to thy urnW
Throws his cold shadows round me while I singX
Damps ev'ry nerve and slackens ev'ry stringX
So when the Moon trims up her waning fireQ
Sweep the night breezes o'er th'Aeolian lyreP
Ling'ring perchance some wild pathetic soundY
Lulls the lorn ear and dies along the groundY
Ye kindred train who o'er the parting graveZ
Have mourn'd the virtues which ye could not saveZ
Ye know how Mem'ry with excursive pow'rA2
Extracts a sweet from ev'ry faded hourQ
From scenes long past regardless of reposeA
She feeds her tears and treasures up her woesA
Thou tuneful mute companion A of my careF
Where now thy notes that linger'd in the airF
That linger still Vain thy harmonious storeV
Thy sweet persuasive triumphs are no moreV
Thy mournful image strikes my wand'ring eyeB
Sad near thy silent strings I sit and sighB
Cold is that band which Music form'd her ownB2
When ev'ry chord resign'd its sweetest toneB2
Ah long fair source of rapture shall thou restR
Silent and sad neglected and unprestR
'Till years lov'd shade superior pow'rs resignD
Or raise one note more eloquent than thineD
Tho' with'ring Sickness mark'd thee in the wombJ
And form'd thy cradle but to form thy tombJ
Yet like a flow'r she bade thee reach thy primeC2
The fairer victim for the stroke of TimeC2
When fond Invention vainly sought thine easeA
The wave salubrious and the morning breezeA
When even Sleep sweet Sleep refus'd thy callD2
Sleep that with sweet refreshment smiles on allD2
When till the morn thine eyes unclos'd and dampE2
Trac'd thy sad semblance in the glimm'ring lampE2
When from thy face Health's latest relic fledR
Where Hope might flatter with reluctant treadR
Still darting forward from the weight of woeF2
Thy soul with all its energy would glowF2
Still with the purest passion wouldst thou proveG2
The glow of friendship and the warmth of loveH2
And ah to sacred Memory ever nighB
Thy wit and humour claim the passing sighB
When thro' the hour with unresisted skillI2
I've seen thee mould each feature to thy willI2
When friends drew round thee with attentive earE
Pleas'd with the raill'ry which they could not fearT
Oh how I've heard thee with concealing artR
Join in the song tho' sorrow rent thy heartR
How have I seen thee too with venial guileJ2
O'er many an anguish force the faithless smileJ2
Seen suffering Nature check each sigh each fearT
To rob maternal fondness of a tearF
Alas those scenes are past Vain was the pray'rA2
That ask'd of Fate to soften and to spareF
Ah vain if wit and virtue could not saveZ
Thy youthful honours from an early graveZ
But yet if here my warm fraternal loveH2
May claim alliance with the realms aboveH2
If kindred Nature with perpetual bloomJ
Transplanted springs and lives beyond the tombJ
Thy pitying soul shall smile upon my griefK2
Shall feel a pang that wishes not reliefK2
In visions still shall shield me as I goF2
Along this gloomy wilderness of woeF2
Shall still regard me with peculiar prideR
On earth my brother and in heav'n my guideR
Methinks I see thee reach th' empyrean shoreV
And heav'n's full chorus hails one angel moreV
While 'mid the seraph forms that round thee flyB
Thy father meets thee with ecstatic eyeB
He springs exulting from his throne of restR
Extends his arms and clasps thee to his breastR
