Lines To Mrs. A. Clarke Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCCD EEFGGF HHIJJI KKLMML NOPQKP RRSTTS

Within his cold and cheerless cellA
I heard the sighing Censor tellA
That ev'ry charm of life was goneB
That ev'ry noble virtue longC
Had ceas'd to wake the Minstrel's songC
And Vice triumphant stood aloneD
-
Poor gloomy reas'ner come with meE
Smooth each dark frown and thou shall seeE
Thy tale is but a mournful dreamF
I'll show thee scenes to yield delightG
I'll show thee forms in Virtue brightG
Illum'd by Heav'n's unclouded beamF
-
See Clarke with ev'ry goodness grac'dH
Her mind the seat of Wit and TasteH
Tho' Wealth invites to Pleasure's bow'rI
See her the haunts of Woe descendJ
Of many a friendless wretch the friendJ
Pleas'd she exerts sweet Pity's pow'rI
-
See her with parent patriot careK
The infant orphan mind prepareK
Assur'd without Instruction's aidL
The proudest nation soon will showM
A wasted form a hectic glowM
A robb'd diseas'd revolting shadeL
-
See her with Prince like spirit pourN
On genuine worth her ample store AO
See her by ev'ry gentle artP
Protect the plant she loves to rearQ
And as she bathes it with a tearK
Grateful it twines around her heartP
-
And there are more of kindred mindR
When with a face more bland and kindR
The Sage in soften'd tone repliedS
'Twas Error made to me the denT
More grateful than the haunts of menT
Henceforth mankind shall be my prideS
