In Devonshire Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEE FFGGHHIIJJKKLLMMNNGO HHPQRRSSTell me thou grotto o'er whose brow are seen | A |
Projecting plumes and shades of deep'ning green | A |
While not a sound disturbs thy stony hall | B |
While all thy dewy drops forget to fall | B |
Why canst thou not thy soothing charms impart | C |
And shed thy quiet o'er this beating heart | C |
Tell me thou richly painted river tell | D |
That on thy mirror'd plane dost mimic well | D |
Each pendent tree and every distant hill | E |
Tipp'd with red lustre beauteous bright and still | E |
- | |
Can I not gazing on thy tranquil tide | F |
Shed ev'ry grief upon thy rocky side | F |
Or must I rove thy margin calm and clear | G |
The only agitated object near | G |
Oh tell me too thou babbling cold cascade | H |
Whose waters falling thro' successive shade | H |
Unspangled by the brightness of the sky | I |
Awake each echo to a soft reply | I |
Say canst thou not my bosom grief befriend | J |
And bid one drop upon my heart descend | J |
When all thy songsters soothe themselves to sleep | K |
Ah must these aching eyes for ever weep | K |
And must their frequent waters like thine own | L |
Drop idly drop on unimpressive stone | L |
Or when my beauteous fair shall deign to grace | M |
The humid foliage of thy mossy base | M |
Canst thou not tell how many a rock below | N |
Impedes to kiss thy waters as they flow | N |
In her mind canst thou not the feeling rear | G |
To stop or thus caress each genuine tear | O |
- | |
Teach her oh teach her then thou cold cascade | H |
Pour all thy lessons for the lovely maid | H |
And thou bless'd grotto let thy silence prove | P |
Her mute consenting answer to my love | Q |
And thou bright river as thou roll'st along | R |
Bear on thy wand'ring wave a lover's song | R |
Strong as thy current as thy waters pure | S |
Teach her to feel the passion I endure | S |
