Colin Chief of Diarmid's kinA
Strode alone to EderlinnA
-
Night and heath and deep morassB
Hear the chain mailed warrior passB
-
Ambushed lay the treacherous foeC
Ear to earth and dart on bowD
-
Vain their arrows' ringing hailE
Fell on pointed helm and mailE
-
As he backward leaped there flewF
Moonlight down the sword he drewF
-
-
In his front the lonely manA
Saw approach the hostile vanA
-
Near him on the moor a tarnA
On a knoll a wattled barnA
-
Refuge bad yet near its doorG
Sank the hot pursuit's uproarG
-
For unsheathed his battle brandH
There they saw great Colin standH
-
Dauntless cried he Here withinA
Rest I then to EderlinnA
-
Yelled the circling hounds in ireI
Set the woven wall on fireJ
-
Sword in hand he stood the lightK
Gleaming on his limbs of mightK
-
Like a cloud built column highL
Red in sunset's flaming skyL
-
All too hot for mortal frameM
Glowed his armour wrapped in flameM
-
Hidden by the wreaths of smokeN
Hewing through the wall he brokeN
-
Felling seven onward spedO
Plunging through the lake's reed bedO
-
Hiss the waters where he springsP
Hatred's yell again forth ringsP
-
But he throws his mail awayQ
Dives and darkness hides his wayQ
-
Smiling hears their lessening dinA
Onward strides to EderlinnA
-
Ages since have passed yet stillR
Tales recount his dauntless willR
-
Pool of the Iron shirt thy nameM
Keeps in Erse the hero's fameM
-
Look you race of ancient GaelE
Never let such memories failE
-
Set them far o'er gems and goldS
For your sons to have and holdS
-
Steadfast Will its goal shall winA
Fairer e'en than EderlinnA
