San Gabriel, On The Pacific Coast. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFEGEG HAIACACA AAAAJAKA LCLMCMCM LNLNJAJA

Grey cowled monk whose faith so earnestA
Guides these Indians' childlike heartsB
As their hands to toil thou turnestA
Teaching them the Builder's artsB
Speak thy thought as now they gatherC
Round the white walls on the plainD
Rearing them for God the FatherC
And the glory of New SpainD
-
Thou St Gabriel knowest onlyE
Why thy holy bells I raiseF
To no turret proud and lonelyE
There to sound the hours of praiseF
Why I keep them close beside meE
Framed within the church's wallsG
Here where heathen lands shall hide meE
Until death to judgment callsG
-
Then St Gabriel in high heavenH
Told the saints this mortal's lotA
As the Angelus at evenI
Rose to day that dieth notA
And from out the nightly wonderC
Of the darkened world would floatA
Mingling with the near sea's thunderC
Yonder belfry's golden noteA
-
Two there were whose loves were blightedA
By the Spanish pride abhorredA
And their vows and wealth they plightedA
To the Missions of the LordA
For his church these bells she gave himJ
When within their glowing mouldA
She had cast what were her treasuresK
All her ornaments of goldA
-
So do these that to his seemingL
Were but good as touched by herC
Ring to seek for love redeemingL
All who sorrow all who errM
Yes though human love be everC
Heard upon the throbbing airM
This shall make his life's endeavourC
Stronger through a woman's prayerM
-
God is not a Lord requiringL
Sacrifice of memories dearN
And their love in life untiringL
To His life hath brought then nearN
Thus his wish to have beside himJ
That which seems her voice is goodA
Lovingly the Lord hath tried himJ
And his heart hath understoodA
