'T was Pentecost the Feast of GladnessA
When woods and fields put off all sadnessA
Thus began the King and spakeB
'So from the hallsA
Of ancient hofburg's wallsA
A luxuriant Spring shall break 'C
-
Drums and trumpets echo loudlyD
Wave the crimson banners proudlyD
From balcony the King looked onE
In the play of spearsA
Fell all the cavaliersA
Before the monarch's stalwart sonF
-
To the barrier of the fightG
Rode at last a sable KnightG
'Sir Knight your name and scutcheon say '-
'Should I speak it hereH
Ye would stand aghast with fearI
I am a Prince of mighty sway '-
-
When he rode into the listsA
The arch of heaven grew black with mistsA
And the castle 'gan to rockJ
At the first blowK
Fell the youth from saddle bowL
Hardly rises from the shockJ
-
Pipe and viol call the dancesA
Torch light through the high halls glancesA
Waves a mighty shadow inM
With manner blandN
Doth ask the maiden's handN
Doth with ter the dance beginM
-
Danced in sable iron sarkO
Danced a measure weird and darkO
Coldly clasped her limbs aroundP
From breast and hairQ
Down fall from her the fairQ
Flowerets faded to the groundP
-
To the sumptuous banquet cameR
Every Knight and every DameR
'Twixt son and daughter all distraughtS
With mournful mindT
The ancient King reclinedT
Gazed at them in silent thoughtS
-
Pale the children both did lookU
But the guest a beaker tookU
'Golden wine will make you wholeV
The children drankW
Gave many a courteous thankW
'O that draught was very cool '-
-
Each the father's breast embracesA
Son and daughter and their facesA
Colorless grow utterlyD
Whichever wayX
Looks the fear struck father grayX
He beholds his children dieY
-
'Woe the blessed children bothZ
Takest thou in the joy of youthA2
Take me too the joyless fatherB2
Spake the grim GuestC2
From his hollow cavernous breastC2
'Roses in the spring I gather '-
