Now round the yielding canopy of shade	A
Again the Guide his heavenly power display'd	A
Sudden the stars their trembling fires withdrew	B
Returning splendors burst upon the view	B
Floods of unfolding light the skies adorn	C
And more than midday glories grace the morn	C
So shone the earth as all the starry train	D
Broad as full suns had sail'd the ethereal plain	D
When no distinguish'd orb could strike the sight	E
But one clear blaze of all surrounding light	E
O'erflow'd the vault of heaven For now in view	B
Remoter climes and future ages drew	B
While deeds of happier fame in long array	F
Call'd into vision fill the new born day	F
Far as the Angelic Power could lift the eye	G
Or earth or ocean bend the yielding sky	G
Or circling suns awake the breathing gale	H
Drake lead the way or Cook extend the sail	H
All lands all seas that boast a present name	I
And all that unborn time shall give to fame	I
Around the chief in fair expansion rise	J
And earth's whole circuit bounds the level'd skies	J
He saw the nations tread their different shores	K
Ply their own toils and claim their local powers	L
He mark'd what tribes still rove the savage waste	M
What happier realms the sweets of plenty taste	M
Where arts and virtues fix their golden reign	D
Or peace adorns or slaughter dyes the plain	D
He saw the restless Tartar proud to roam	N
Move with his herds and spread his transient home	N
Thro' the vast tracts of China's fixt domain	D
The sons of dull contentment plough the plain	D
The gloomy Turk ascends the blood stain'd car	O
And Russian banners shade the plains of war	P
Brazilia's wilds and Afric's burning sands	Q
With bickering strife inflame the furious bands	Q
On blest Atlantic isles and Europe's shores	K
Proud wealth and commerce heap their growing stores	K
While his own western world in prospect fair	R
Calms her brave sons now breathing from the war	P
Unfolds her harbours spreads the genial soil	S
And welcomes freemen to the cheerful toil	S
When thus the Power In this extended view	B
Behold the paths thy changing race pursue	B
See thro' the whole the same progressive plan	T
That draws for mutual succour man to man	T
From friends to tribes from tribes to realms ascend	U
Their powers their interests and their passions blend	U
Adorn their manners social virtues spread	V
Enlarge their compacts and extend their trade	A
While chiefs like thee with persevering soul	W
Bid venturous barks to new discoveries roll	W
High in the north and tow'rd the southern skies	J
New isles and nations greet the roving eyes	J
Till each remotest realm by friendship join'd	X
Links in the chain that binds all human kind	Y
The union'd banners rise at last unfurl'd	Z
And wave triumphant round the accordant world	Z
As small swift streams their furious course impel	A2
Till meeting waves their winding currents swell	A2
Then widening sweep thro' each descending plain	D
And move majestic to the boundless main	D
'Tis thus society's small sources rise	J
Through passions wild their devious progress lies	J
Interest and faith and pride and power withstand	B2
And mutual ills the growing views expand	B2
Till tribes and states and empires find their place	C2
And one wide interest sways the peaceful race	C2
And see in haste the ascending scenes advance	D2
The ports unfold the glimmering navies dance	D2
For commerce arm'd the different Powers combine	E2
And Heaven approving aids the blest design	E2
Tho' jarring realms awhile the combat wage	F2
And hold in lingering strife the unsettled age	F2
Yet no rude war that sweeps the crimson plain	D
Shall dare disturb the labours of the main	D
For Heaven impartial spread the watery way	F
Liberal as air and unconfined as day	F
That every distant land the wealth might share	R
Exchange their fruits and fill their treasures there	R
Their speech assimilate their empires blend	U
And mutual interest fix the mutual friend	U
The hero look'd beneath his wondering eyes	J
Bright streamers lengthen round the seas and skies	J
The countless nations open all their stores	K
Load every wave and croud the masted shores	K
The sails in mingling mazes sweep the air	R
And commerce triumphs o'er the rage of war	P
From Baltic streams that swell in lonely pride	G2
From Rhine's long course and Texel's labouring tide	G2
From Gallia's coast from Albion's hoary height	E
And fair Hibernia clothed in purer light	E
Hispania's strand that two broad oceans lave	H2
From Senegal's and Tagus' winding wave	H2
The gathering masts in peaceful squadrons rise	J
And wave their cloudly curtains to the skies	J
Thro' the deep strait that leads the midland tide	G2
The sails look forth and swell their beauteous pride	G2
Where Asia's isles and utmost shores extend	U
Like rising suns the sheeted masts ascend	U
And join with peaceful toil the friendly train	D
No more to combat on the liquid plain	D
In distant glory where the watery way	F
Spreads the blue borders of descending day	F
The flowing flags unfold in lengthening sweep	I2
Pride of the world and daughters of the deep	I2
From Arctic heavens and deep in southern skies	J
Where frost recedes as blooms of culture rise	J
Where eastern Amur's lengthening current glides	J2
Where California breaks the billowy tides	J2
Peruvian streams their golden margins boast	K2
And spreading Chili leads the channel'd coast	K2
The pinions swell till all the cloud like train	D
From pole to pole o'ershades the whitening main	D
So some imperial Seraph placed on high	G
From heaven's sublimest tower o'erlook'd the sky	G
When space unfolding heard the voice of God	L2
And suns and stars and systems roll'd abroad	M2
Caught their first splendors from the all beaming Eye	G
Began their years and vaulted round the sky	G
Their mingling spheres in bright confusion play	F
Exchange their beams and fill the new born day	F
He saw as widely spreads the unchannel'd plain	D
Where inland realms for ages bloom'd in vain	D
Canals long winding ope a watery flight	E
And distant streams and seas and lakes unite	E
Where Darien hills o'erlook the gulphy tide	G2
By human art the ridgy banks divide	G2
Ascending sails the opening pass pursue	B
And waft the sparkling treasures of Peru	B
Jeneiro's stream from Plata winds his way	F
And bold Madera opes from Paraguay	F
From fair Albania tow'rd the falling sun	N2
Back thro' the midland lengthening channels run	N2
Meet the far lakes their beauteous towns that lave	H2
And Hudson join to broad Ohio's wave	H2
From dim Superior whose unfathom'd sea	O2
Drinks the mild splendors of the setting day	F
New paths unfolding lead their watery pride	G2
And towns and empires rise along their side	G2
To Missisippi's source the passes bend	U
And to the broad Pacific main extend	U
From the red banks of blest Arabia's tide	G2
Thro' the dread Isthmus waves unwonted glide	G2
From Europe's crouded coasts while bounding sails	P2
Look through the pass and call the Asian gales	P2
Volga and Oby distant oceans join	Q2
And the long Danube meets the rolling Rhine	E2
While other streams that cleave the midland plain	D
Spread their new courses to the distant main	D
He saw the aspiring genius of the age	F2
Soar in the bard and strengthen in the sage	F2
With daring thought thro' time's long flight extend	U
Rove the wide earth and with the heaven ascend	U
Bid each fond wish that leads the soul abroad	M2
Breathe to all men to nature and to God	L2
He saw where pale diseases wont to brave	H2
The pride of art and croud the untimely grave	H2
With long wrought life the nations learn to glow	R2
And blooming health adorn the locks of snow	R2
A countless train the healing science aid	A
Its power establish and its blessings spread	V
In every shape that varying matter gives	S2
That rests or ripens vegetates or lives	S2
By chymic power the springs of health they trace	C2
And add new beauties to the joyous race	C2
While thus the realms their mutual glories lend	U
Unnumber'd sires the cares of state attend	U
Blest with each human art and skill'd to find	Y
Each wild device that prompts the wayward mind	Y
What soft restraints the untemper'd breast requires	L
To caste new joys and cherish new desires	L
Expand the selfish to the social flame	I
And fire the soul to deeds of	T2
