Now round the yielding canopy of shadeA
Again the Guide his heavenly power display'dA
Sudden the stars their trembling fires withdrewB
Returning splendors burst upon the viewB
Floods of unfolding light the skies adornC
And more than midday glories grace the mornC
So shone the earth as all the starry trainD
Broad as full suns had sail'd the ethereal plainD
When no distinguish'd orb could strike the sightE
But one clear blaze of all surrounding lightE
O'erflow'd the vault of heaven For now in viewB
Remoter climes and future ages drewB
While deeds of happier fame in long arrayF
Call'd into vision fill the new born dayF
Far as the Angelic Power could lift the eyeG
Or earth or ocean bend the yielding skyG
Or circling suns awake the breathing galeH
Drake lead the way or Cook extend the sailH
All lands all seas that boast a present nameI
And all that unborn time shall give to fameI
Around the chief in fair expansion riseJ
And earth's whole circuit bounds the level'd skiesJ
He saw the nations tread their different shoresK
Ply their own toils and claim their local powersL
He mark'd what tribes still rove the savage wasteM
What happier realms the sweets of plenty tasteM
Where arts and virtues fix their golden reignD
Or peace adorns or slaughter dyes the plainD
He saw the restless Tartar proud to roamN
Move with his herds and spread his transient homeN
Thro' the vast tracts of China's fixt domainD
The sons of dull contentment plough the plainD
The gloomy Turk ascends the blood stain'd carO
And Russian banners shade the plains of warP
Brazilia's wilds and Afric's burning sandsQ
With bickering strife inflame the furious bandsQ
On blest Atlantic isles and Europe's shoresK
Proud wealth and commerce heap their growing storesK
While his own western world in prospect fairR
Calms her brave sons now breathing from the warP
Unfolds her harbours spreads the genial soilS
And welcomes freemen to the cheerful toilS
When thus the Power In this extended viewB
Behold the paths thy changing race pursueB
See thro' the whole the same progressive planT
That draws for mutual succour man to manT
From friends to tribes from tribes to realms ascendU
Their powers their interests and their passions blendU
Adorn their manners social virtues spreadV
Enlarge their compacts and extend their tradeA
While chiefs like thee with persevering soulW
Bid venturous barks to new discoveries rollW
High in the north and tow'rd the southern skiesJ
New isles and nations greet the roving eyesJ
Till each remotest realm by friendship join'dX
Links in the chain that binds all human kindY
The union'd banners rise at last unfurl'dZ
And wave triumphant round the accordant worldZ
As small swift streams their furious course impelA2
Till meeting waves their winding currents swellA2
Then widening sweep thro' each descending plainD
And move majestic to the boundless mainD
'Tis thus society's small sources riseJ
Through passions wild their devious progress liesJ
Interest and faith and pride and power withstandB2
And mutual ills the growing views expandB2
Till tribes and states and empires find their placeC2
And one wide interest sways the peaceful raceC2
And see in haste the ascending scenes advanceD2
The ports unfold the glimmering navies danceD2
For commerce arm'd the different Powers combineE2
And Heaven approving aids the blest designE2
Tho' jarring realms awhile the combat wageF2
And hold in lingering strife the unsettled ageF2
Yet no rude war that sweeps the crimson plainD
Shall dare disturb the labours of the mainD
For Heaven impartial spread the watery wayF
Liberal as air and unconfined as dayF
That every distant land the wealth might shareR
Exchange their fruits and fill their treasures thereR
Their speech assimilate their empires blendU
And mutual interest fix the mutual friendU
The hero look'd beneath his wondering eyesJ
Bright streamers lengthen round the seas and skiesJ
The countless nations open all their storesK
Load every wave and croud the masted shoresK
The sails in mingling mazes sweep the airR
And commerce triumphs o'er the rage of warP
From Baltic streams that swell in lonely prideG2
From Rhine's long course and Texel's labouring tideG2
From Gallia's coast from Albion's hoary heightE
And fair Hibernia clothed in purer lightE
Hispania's strand that two broad oceans laveH2
From Senegal's and Tagus' winding waveH2
The gathering masts in peaceful squadrons riseJ
And wave their cloudly curtains to the skiesJ
Thro' the deep strait that leads the midland tideG2
The sails look forth and swell their beauteous prideG2
Where Asia's isles and utmost shores extendU
Like rising suns the sheeted masts ascendU
And join with peaceful toil the friendly trainD
No more to combat on the liquid plainD
In distant glory where the watery wayF
Spreads the blue borders of descending dayF
The flowing flags unfold in lengthening sweepI2
Pride of the world and daughters of the deepI2
From Arctic heavens and deep in southern skiesJ
Where frost recedes as blooms of culture riseJ
Where eastern Amur's lengthening current glidesJ2
Where California breaks the billowy tidesJ2
Peruvian streams their golden margins boastK2
And spreading Chili leads the channel'd coastK2
The pinions swell till all the cloud like trainD
From pole to pole o'ershades the whitening mainD
So some imperial Seraph placed on highG
From heaven's sublimest tower o'erlook'd the skyG
When space unfolding heard the voice of GodL2
And suns and stars and systems roll'd abroadM2
Caught their first splendors from the all beaming EyeG
Began their years and vaulted round the skyG
Their mingling spheres in bright confusion playF
Exchange their beams and fill the new born dayF
He saw as widely spreads the unchannel'd plainD
Where inland realms for ages bloom'd in vainD
Canals long winding ope a watery flightE
And distant streams and seas and lakes uniteE
Where Darien hills o'erlook the gulphy tideG2
By human art the ridgy banks divideG2
Ascending sails the opening pass pursueB
And waft the sparkling treasures of PeruB
Jeneiro's stream from Plata winds his wayF
And bold Madera opes from ParaguayF
From fair Albania tow'rd the falling sunN2
Back thro' the midland lengthening channels runN2
Meet the far lakes their beauteous towns that laveH2
And Hudson join to broad Ohio's waveH2
From dim Superior whose unfathom'd seaO2
Drinks the mild splendors of the setting dayF
New paths unfolding lead their watery prideG2
And towns and empires rise along their sideG2
To Missisippi's source the passes bendU
And to the broad Pacific main extendU
From the red banks of blest Arabia's tideG2
Thro' the dread Isthmus waves unwonted glideG2
From Europe's crouded coasts while bounding sailsP2
Look through the pass and call the Asian galesP2
Volga and Oby distant oceans joinQ2
And the long Danube meets the rolling RhineE2
While other streams that cleave the midland plainD
Spread their new courses to the distant mainD
He saw the aspiring genius of the ageF2
Soar in the bard and strengthen in the sageF2
With daring thought thro' time's long flight extendU
Rove the wide earth and with the heaven ascendU
Bid each fond wish that leads the soul abroadM2
Breathe to all men to nature and to GodL2
He saw where pale diseases wont to braveH2
The pride of art and croud the untimely graveH2
With long wrought life the nations learn to glowR2
And blooming health adorn the locks of snowR2
A countless train the healing science aidA
Its power establish and its blessings spreadV
In every shape that varying matter givesS2
That rests or ripens vegetates or livesS2
By chymic power the springs of health they traceC2
And add new beauties to the joyous raceC2
While thus the realms their mutual glories lendU
Unnumber'd sires the cares of state attendU
Blest with each human art and skill'd to findY
Each wild device that prompts the wayward mindY
What soft restraints the untemper'd breast requiresL
To caste new joys and cherish new desiresL
Expand the selfish to the social flameI
And fire the soul to deeds ofT2
