Columbus hail'd them with a father's smileA
Fruits of his cares and children of his toilB
With tears of joy while still his eyes descriedC
Their course adventurous o'er the distant tideC
Thus when o'er deluged earth her Seraph stoodC
The tost ark bounding on the shoreless floodC
The sacred treasure claim'd his guardian viewD
While climes unnoticed in the wave withdrewD
He saw the squadrons reach the rising strandC
Leap from the wave and share the joyous landC
Receding forests yield the heroes roomE
And opening wilds with fields and gardens bloomE
Fill'd with the glance extatic all his soulF
Now seems unbounded with the scene to rollF
And now impatient with retorted eyeG
Perceives his station in another skyG
Waft me O winged Angel waft me o'erH
With those blest heroes to the happy shoreI
There let me live and die but all appearsJ
A fleeting vision these are future yearsJ
Yet grant in nearer view the climes may spreadC
And my glad steps may seem their walks to treadC
While eastern coasts and kingdoms wrapp'd in nightC
Arise no more to intercept the sightC
The hero spoke the Angel's powerful handC
Moves brightening o'er the visionary landC
The height that bore them still sublimer grewD
And earth's whole circuit settled from their viewD
A dusky Deep serene as breathless evenK
Seem'd vaulting downward like another heavenL
The sun rejoicing on his western wayM
Stamp'd his fair image in the inverted dayM
Sudden the northern shores again drew nighG
And life and action fill'd the hero's eyeG
Where the dread Laurence breaks his passage wideC
Where Missisippi's milder currents glideC
Where midland realms their swelling mountainsheaveG
And slope their champaigns to the distant waveG
On the green banks and o'er the extended plainN
Rise into sight the happiest walks of manO
The placid ports that break the billowing galesP
Rear their tall masts and stretch their whitening sailsP
The harvests wave the groves with fruitage bendC
And bulwarks heave and spiry domes ascendC
Fair works of peace in growing splendor riseQ
And grateful earth repays the bounteous skiesQ
Till war invades when opening vales discloseR
In moving crouds the savage tribes of foesR
High tufted quills their painted foreheads pressS
Dark spoils of beasts their shaggy shoulders dressS
The bow bent forward for the combat strungT
The ax the quiver on the girdle hungT
The deep discordant yells convulse the airU
And the wild waste resounds approaching warI
The hero look'd and every darken'd heightC
Pours down the dusky squadrons to the fightC
Where Kennebec's high source forsakes the skyG
Where deep Champlain's extended waters lieG
Where the bold Hudson leads his shadowy tideC
Where Kaatskill heights the azure vault divideC
Where the dim Alleganies range sublimeV
And give their streams to every distant climeV
The swarms descended like an evening shadeC
And wolves and vultures follow'd where they spreadC
Thus when a storm on eastern pinions drivenL
Meets the firm Andes in the midst of heavenL
The clouds convulse the torrents pour amainL
And the black waters sweep the subject plainL
Thro' cultured fields the bloody myriads spreadC
Sack the lone village strow the streets with deadC
The flames aspire the smoky volumes riseQ
And shrieks and shouts redouble round the skiesQ
Fair babes and matrons in their domes expireW
Or burst their passage thro' the folding fireH
O'er woods and plains promiscuous rave alongX
The yelling victors and the driven throngX
The streams run purple all the extended shoreI
Is wrapp'd in flames and trod with steps of goreI
Till numerous hosts collecting from afarY
Exalt the standard and oppose the warI
Point their loud thunders on the shouting foeG
And brave the shafted terrors of the bowZ
When like a broken wave the savage trainL
Lead back the flight and scatter o'er the plainL
Slay their weak captives leave their shafts in hasteC
Forget their spoils and scour the distant wasteC
As when the morning sun begins his wayM
The shadows vanish where he gives the dayM
So the dark tribes from brighter regions hurl'dC
Sweep o'er the heights and lakes far thro' the wilder'd worldC
Now move in nobler pomp the toils of peaceA2
New temples rise and splendid towers increaseA2
He saw where Penn his peaceful thousands ledC
A spreading town bright Del'ware's waves o'ershadeC
The crossing streets in fair proportion runL
The walls and pavements sparkle to the sunL
Like that famed city rose the beauteous planL
Whose spacious bounds Semiramis beganL
Long ages finish'd what her hand design'dC
The pride of kings and wonder of mankindC
Where labouring Hudson's glassy current straysB2
York's growing walls their splendid turrets raiseB2
Albania rising in her midland prideC
Rolls her rich treasures on his lengthening tideC
Fair in her circling streams blest Newport lavesB2
And Boston opens o'er the subject wavesB2
On southern shores where happier currents glideC
The banks bloom gay and cities grace their sideC
Like morning clouds that tinge their skirts with goldC
Bright Charleston's roofs and sparkling spires unfoldC
Thro' each extended realm in wisdom greatC
Rose the dread sires that claim the cares of stateC
Long robes of purest white their forms embraceB2
Their better hands imperial sceptres graceB2
Their left the laws that shining leaves infoldC
Where rights and charters flame in figured goldC
High on a seat that opening crouds discloseB2
Blest Baltimore from toils and dangers roseB2
The sacred Cross before his kindling eyesB2
From foes defended and of peace the prizeB2
Waves o'er the host who catch the liberal flameV
Partake the freedom and extend the fameV
With port majestic rising to his throneL
Immortal Penn in rival lustre shoneL
Dispensing justice to the train belowG
Peace in his voice and firmness on his browZ
Another croud sees generous Belcher standC
And gains new glory from his liberal handC
He aids the toil and still exalts the planL
Patron of science liberty and manL
With steady step bold Winthrop towers alongX
Waves the bright wand and cheers the noble throngX
Beneath his firm unalterable swayM
Fair Virtue reigns and grateful realms obeyM
While other forms the rising states aroundC
By wisdom graced with equal honours crown'dC
Trail the long robe extend the sceptred handC
Drive guilt and slavery from the joyous landC
Bid arts and culture wealth and wisdom riseB2
Friends of mankind and favourites of the skiesB2
Up the wild streams that bound the hero's viewG
Great Gallia's sons their western course pursueG
On fertile banks fair towns and villas roseB2
That dared the vengeance of surrounding foesB2
Here cold Canadia round her Laurence spreadC
And raised her cities o'er his watery gladeC
There Louisiana's happier borders runL
Spread fairer lawns and feel a purer sunL
While the glad lakes and broad Ohio's streamV
Seem smiling conscious of approaching sameV
Now larger barks pursue their rapid courseB2
Unite their labours and extend their forceB2
Beneath their listed sails arise in sightC
White flags display'd and armies robed in whiteC
Through the deep midland waste they stream afarY
And threat weak realms with desolating warI
Where proud Quebec exalts her rocky seatC
They range their camp and spread the frowning fleetC
Lead conquering legions western wilds to braveG
Raise lone Oswago o'er the untraversed waveG
While other squadrons tempt another floodC
And dark Ohio swells beneath the loadC
When fierce from Albion's coast a warlike trainL
Moves o'er the sea and treads the dusky plainL
Swift to their aid from all the crouded strandC
Rise bright in arms the wide colonial bandC
They join their force and tow'rd the falling dayM
The same bold banners lead their dreadful wayM
O'er Allagany heights like streams of fireH
The red flags wave and glittering arms aspireW
Beyond the hills where o'er the lonely floodC
A hostile fortress spreads its bounds abroadC
They bend the venturous march the host withinL
Behold their danger and the strife beginL
