High o'er the changing scene as thus he gazedA
The indulgent Power his arm sublimely raisedA
When round the realms superior lustre flewB
And call'd new wonders to the hero's viewB
He saw at once as far as eye could roveC
Like scattering herds the swarthy people moveD
In tribes innumerable all the wasteE
Beneath their steps a varying shadow castF
As airy shapes beneath the moon's pale eyeG
When broken clouds sail o'er the curtain'd skyG
Spread thro' the grove and flit along the gladeH
And cast their grisly phantoms thro' the shadeH
So move the hordes in thickers half conceal'dI
Or vagrant stalking o'er the open fieldI
Here ever restless tribes despising homeJ
O'er shadowy streams and trackless deserts roamJ
While others there thro' downs and hamlets strayK
And rising domes a happier state displayK
The painted chiefs in death's grim terrors drestI
Rise fierce to war and beat the savage breastI
Dark round their steps collecting warriors pourL
And dire revenge begins the hideous roarL
While to the realms around the signal fliesM
And tribes on tribes in dread disorder riseM
Track the mute foe and scour the distant woodI
Wide as a storm and dreadful as a floodI
Now deep in groves the silent ambush layK
Or wing the flight or sweep the prize awayK
Unconscious babes and reverend sires devourN
Drink the warm blood and paint their cheeks with goreL
While all their mazy movements fill the viewB
Where'er they turn his eager eyes pursueB
He saw the same dire visage thro' the wholeO
And mark'd the same fierce savageness of soulO
In doubt he stood with anxious thoughts oppress'dI
And thus his wavering mind the Power address'dI
Say from what source O Voice of wisdom sprungP
The countless tribes of this amazing throngQ
Where human frames and brutal souls combineR
No force can tame them and no arts refineR
Can these be fashion'd on the social planS
Or boast a lineage with the race of manS
In yon fair isle when first my wandering viewB
Ranged the glad coast and met the savage crewB
A timorous herd like harmless roes they ranS
Hail'd us as Gods from whom their race beganS
Supply'd our various wants relieved our toilT
And oped the unbounded treasures of their isleU
But when their fears allay'd in us they traceV
The well known image of a mortal raceV
When Spanish blood their wondering eyes beheldI
Returning rage their changing bosoms swell'dI
Their jaws the crimson dainty long'd to tasteI
And spread with foreign flesh the rich repastI
My homeward sail far distant on the mainW
Incautious left a small unguarded trainW
When in their horrid power bereft of aidI
That train with thee O lost Arada bledI
No faith no treaty calms their maddening flameX
Rage all their joy and slaughter all their aimX
How the dread savage bands with fury burn'dI
When o'er the wave our growing host return'dI
Now mild with joy a friendly smile they show'dI
And now their dark red visage frown'd in bloodI
Till call'd afar from all the circling shoreL
Swift thro' the groves the yelling squadrons pourL
The wide wings stretching sweep the unbounded plainW
That groans beneath the innumerable trainW
Our scanty files ascending o'er the strandI
Tread the bold champaign and the fight demandI
With steeds and hounds the dreadful onset movesY
And thundering batteries rend the distant grovesZ
Swift fly the scattering foes like shades of nightI
When orient splendors urge their rapid flightI
Our proffer'd friendship bade the discord ceaseA2
Spared the grim host and gave the terms of peaceA2
The arts of civil life we strove to lendI
Their lands to culture and their joys extendI
Sublime their views fair virtue's charms displayK
And point their passage to eternal dayK
Still proud to rove our offers they disdainW
Insult our friendship and our rites prophaneW
In that blest island still the myriads restI
Bask in the sunshine wander with the beastI
Feed on the foe or from the victor flyG
Rise into life exhaust their rage and dieG
Tell then my Seer from what dire sons of earthB2
The brutal people drew their ancient birthB2
Whether in realms the western heavens that closeC2
A tribe distinct from other nations roseD2
Born to subjection when in happier timeE2
A nobler race should hail their fruitful climeE2
Or if a common source all nations claimE2
Their lineage form and reasoning powers the sameE2
What sovereign cause in secret wisdom laidI
This wonderous change in God's own work has madeI
Why various powers of soul and tints of faceV
In different climes diversify the raceV
To whom the Guide Unnumber'd causes lieG
In earth and sea and round the varying skyG
That fire the soul or damp the genial flameE2
And work their wonders on the human frameE2
See beauty form and colour change with placeV
Here charms of health the blooming visage graceV
There pale diseases float in every windI
Deform the figure and degrade the mindI
From earth's own elements thy race at firstI
Rose into life the children of the dustI
These kindred elements by various useF2
Nourish the growth and every change produceF2
Pervade the pores awake the infant bloomE2
Lead life along and ope the certain tombE2
In each ascending stage the man sustainW
His breath his food his physic and his baneW
In due proportions where these virtues lieG
A perfect form their equal aids supplyG
And while unchanged the efficient causes reignW
Age following age the unvaried race maintainW
But where crude elements distemper'd riseM
And cast their sickening vapours round the skiesM
Unlike that harmony of human frameE2
Where God's first works and nature's were the sameE2
The unconscious tribes attempering to the climeE2
Still vary downward with the years of timeE2
Till fix'd at last their characters abideI
And local likeness feeds their local prideI
The soul too varying with the changing climeE2
Feeble or fierce or groveling or sublimeE2
Forms with the body to a kindred planW
And lives the same a nation or a manW
Yet think not clime alone or height of polesG2
On every shore the springs of life controulsG2
A different cast the glowing zone demandsG2
In Paria's blooms from Tombut's burning sandsG2
Internal causes thro' the earth and skiesG2
Blow in the breeze or on the mountain riseG2
Thro' air and ocean with their changes runW
Breathe from the ground or circle with the funW
Where these long shores their boundless regions spreadI
See the same form all different tribes pervadeI
Thro' all alike the fertile forests bloomE2
And all uncultured shed a solemn gloomE2
Thro' all great nature's boldest features riseG2
Sink into vales and tower amid the skiesG2
Streams darkly winding stretch a broader swayK
The groves and mountains bolder walks displayK
A dread sublimity informs the wholeO
And wakes a dread sublimity of soulO
Yet time and art shall other changes findI
And open still and vary still the mindI
The countless swarms that tread these dank abodesG2
Who glean spontaneous fruits and range the woodsG2
Fix'd here for ages in their swarthy faceG2
Display the wild complexion of the placeG2
Yet when their tribes to happy nations riseG2
And earth by culture warms the genial skiesG2
A fairer tint and more majestic graceG2
Shall flush their features and exalt the raceG2
While milder arts with social joys refinedI
Inspire new beauties in the growing mindI
Thy followers too fair Europe's noblest prideI
When future gales shall wing them o'er the tideI
A ruddier hue and deeper shade shall gainW
And stalk in statelier figures o'er the plainW
While nature's grandeur lifts the eye abroadI
O'er these dread footsteps of the forming GodI
Wing'd on a wider glance the venturous soulO
Bids greater powers and bolder thoughts unrollO
The sage the chief the patriot unconfinedI
Shield the weak world and counsel for mankindI
But think not thou in all the race of manW
That different pairs in different climes beganW
Or tribes distinct by signal marks confestI
Were born to serve or subjugate the restI
The hero heard But say celestial GuideI
Who led the wanderers o'er the bH2
