-
-
Now twenty years these children of the skiesC
Beheld their gradual growing empire riseC
They ruled with rigid but with generous careD
Diffused their arts and sooth'd the rage of warE
Bade yon tall temple grace their favorite isleF
The mines unfold the cultured valleys smileF
Those broad foundations bend their arches highG
And rear imperial Cusco to the skyG
Wealth wisdom force consolidate the reignH
From the rude Andes to the western mainH
-
But frequent inroads from the savage bandsI
Lead fire and slaughter o'er the labor'd landsI
They sack the temples the gay fields defaceJ
And vow destruction to the Incan raceJ
The king undaunted in defensive warE
Repels their hordes and speeds their flight afarK
Stung with defeat they range a wider woodL
And rouse fresh tribes for future fields of bloodM
-
Where yon blue ridges hang their cliffs on highG
And suns infulminate the stormful skyG
The nations temper'd to the turbid airD
Breathe deadly strife and sigh for battle's blareD
Tis here they meditate with one vast blowN
To crush the race that rules the plains belowN
Capac with caution views the dark designO
Learns from all points what hostile myriads joinP
And seeks in time by proffer'd leagues to gainH
A bloodless victory and enlarge his reignH
-
His eldest hope young Rocha at his callQ
Resigns his charge within the temple wallQ
In whom began with reverend forms of aweR
The functions grave of priesthood and of lawS
-
In early youth ere yet the ripening sunT
Had three short lustres o'er his childhood runT
The prince had learnt beneath his father's handU
The well framed code that sway'd the sacred landU
With rites mysterious served the Power divineO
Prepared the altar and adorn'd the shrineO
Responsive hail'd with still returning praiseV
Each circling season that the God displaysV
Sooth'd with funereal hymns the parting deadW
At nuptial feasts the joyful chorus ledW
While evening incense and the morning songX
Rose from his hand or trembled on his tongueY
-
Thus form'd for empire ere he gain'd the swayZ
To rule with reverence and with power obeyZ
Reflect the glories of the parent SunT
And shine the Capac of his future throneA2
Employed his docile years till now from farK
The rumor'd leagues proclaim approaching warE
Matured for active scenes he quits the shrineO
To aid in council or in arms to shineO
-
Amid the chieftains that the court composeB2
In modest mien the stripling pontiff roseB2
With reverence bow'd conspicuous o'er the restC2
Approach'd the throne and thus the sire addrestC2
Great king of nations heaven descended sageD2
Thy second heir has reach'd the destined ageD2
To take these priestly robes to his pure handC2
I yield them pure and wait thy kind commandC2
Should foes invade permit this arm to shareD
The toils the triumphs every chance of warE
For this dread conflict all our force demandsI
In one wide field to whelm the brutal bandsI
Pour to the mountain gods their wonted foodC2
And save thy realms from future leagues of bloodC2
Yet oh may sovereign mercy first ordainH
Propounded compact to the savage trainH
I'll go with terms of peace to spread thy swayZ
And teach the blessings of the God of dayZ
-
The sire return'd My great desire you knowN
To shield from slaughter and preserve the foeN
In bands of concord all their tribes to bindC2
And live the friend and guardian of mankindC2
Should strife begin thy youthful arm shall shareD
The toils of glory thro the walks of warE
But o'er their hills to seek alone the foesB2
To gain their confidence or brave their blowsB2
Bend their proud souls to reason's voice divineO
Claims hardier limbs and riper years than thineO
Yet one of heavenly race the task requiresE2
Whose mystic rites control the solar firesE2
So the sooth'd Godhead proves to faithless eyesC
His love to man his empire of the skiesC
-
Some veteran chief in those rough labors triedC2
Shall aid thee on and go thy faithful guideC2
O'er dreary heights thy sinking limbs sustainH
Teach the dark wiles of each insidious trainH
Thro all extremes of life thy voice attendC2
In counsel lead thee or in arms defendC2
And three firm youths thy chosen friends shall goN
To learn the climes and meditate the foeN
That wars of future years their skill may findC2
To serve the realm and save the savage kindC2
-
Rise then my son first partner of my fameF2
With early toils to build thy sacred nameF2
In high behest for his own legate knownA2
Proclaim the bounties of our sire the SunT
Tell how his fruits beneath our culture riseC
His stars how glorious gem our cloudless skiesC
And how to us his hand hath kindly givenT
His peaceful laws the purest grace of heavenT
With power to widen his terrestrial swayZ
And give our blessings where he gives the dayZ
Yet should the stubborn nations still prepareD
The shaft of slaughter for the barbarous warE
Tell them we know to tread the crimson plainH
And God's own children never yield to manG2
-
But ah my child with steps of caution goN
The ways are hideous and enraged the foeN
Blood stains their altars all their feasts are bloodC2
Death their delight and darkness reigns their GodC2
Tigers and vultures storms and earthquakes shareD
Their rites of worship and their spoils of warE
Shouldst thou my Rocha tempt too far their ireH2
Should those dear relics feed a murderous fireI2
Deep sighs would rend thy wretched mother's breastC2
The pale Sun sink in clouds of darkness drestC2
Thy sire and mournful nations rue the dayC2
That drew thy steps from these sad walls awayC2
-
Yet go tis virtue calls and realms unknownA2
Won by these works may bless thy future throneA2
Millions of unborn souls in time may seeB
Their doom reversed and owe their peace to theeB
Deluded sires with murdering hands no moreE
Feed fancied demons with their children's goreE
But sway'd by happier sceptres here beholdC2
The rites of freedom and the shrines of goldC2
Be wise be mindful of thy realm and throneA2
God speed thy labors and preserve my sonT
-
Soon the glad prince in robes of white array'dC2
Call'd his attendants and the sire obey'dC2
A diamond broad in burning gold imprestC2
Display'd the sun's bright image on his breastC2
A pearl dropt girdle bound his waist belowN
And the white lautu graced his lofty browJ2
They journey'd forth o'ermarching far the moundC2
That flank'd the kingdom on its Andean boundC2
Ridge after ridge thro vagrant hordes they pastC2
Where each new tribe seem'd wilder than the lastC2
To all they preach and prove the solar swayC2
And climb fresh mountains on their tedious wayC2
-
At length as thro disparting clouds they riseC
And hills above them still obstruct the skiesC
While a dead calm o'er all the region stoodC2
And not a leaf could fan its parent woodC2
Sudden a strange portentous noise beganG2
The birds fled wild the beasts for shelter ranG2
Slow sullen loud with deep astounding blareD
Swell the strong tones of subterranean warE
Behind before beneath them groans the groundC2
Earth heaves and labors with the shuddering soundC2
Columns of smoke that cap the rumbling heightC2
Roll reddening far thro heaven and choke the lightC2
From toC2
