Psalm Cxxxvii The Babylonian Captivity Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEDE FGFG HIHI GJGK LELEALONG the banks where Babel's current flows | A |
Our captive bands in deep despondence stray'd | B |
While Zion's fall in sad remembrance rose | A |
Her friends her children mingled with the dead | C |
- | |
The tuneless harp that once with joy we strung | D |
When praise employ'd and mirth inspir'd the lay | E |
In mournful silence on the willows hung | D |
And growing grief prolong'd the tedious day | E |
- | |
The barbarous tyrants to increase the woe | F |
With taunting smiles a song of Zion claim | G |
Bid sacred praise in strains melodious flow | F |
While they blaspheme the great Jehovah's name | G |
- | |
But how in heathen chains and lands unknown | H |
Shall Israel's sons a song of Zion raise | I |
O hapless Salem God's terrestrial throne | H |
Thou land of glory sacred mount of praise | I |
- | |
If e'er my memory lose thy lovely name | G |
If my cold heart neglect my kindred race | J |
Let dire destruction seize this guilty frame | G |
My hand shall perish and my voice shall cease | K |
- | |
Yet shall the Lord who hears when Zion calls | L |
O'ertake her foes with terror and dismay | E |
His arm avenge her desolated walls | L |
And raise her children to eternal day | E |
