Sound sound soundA
O colossal walls and crown'dA
In one eternal thunderB
Sound sound soundA
O ye oceans overheadC
While we walk subdued in wonderB
In the ferns and grasses underB
And beside the swift MercedD
-
Fret fret fretE
Streaming sounding banners setE
On the giant granite castlesF
In the clouds and in the snowG
But the foe he comes not yetE
We are loyal valiant vassalsF
And we touch the trailing tasslesF
Of the banners far belowG
-
Surge surge surgeH
From the white Sierra's vergeH
To the very valley blossomI
Surge surge surgeH
Yet the song bird builds a homeJ
And the mossy branches cross themK
In the clouds of falling foamJ
-
Sweep sweep sweepL
O ye heaven born and deepL
In one dread unbroken chorusF
We may wonder or may weepL
We may wait on God before usF
We may shout or lift a handM
We may bow down and deplore usF
But may never understandM
-
Beat beat beatN
We advance but would retreatN
From this restless broken breastO
Of the earth in a convulsionP
We would rest but dare not restO
For the angel of expulsionP
From this Paradise belowG
Waves run onward and we goG
