Behind him lay the gray AzoresA
Behind the Gates of HerculesB
Before him not the ghost of shoresA
Before him only shoreless seasB
The good mate said Now must we prayC
For lo the very stars are goneD
Brave Admiral speak what shall I sayC
Why say Sail on sail on and on 'E
-
My men grow mutinous day by dayC
My men grow ghastly wan and weakF
The stout mate thought of home a sprayC
Of salt wave washed his swarthy cheekF
What shall I say brave Admiral sayC
If we sight naught but seas at dawnD
Why you shall say at break of dayC
Sail on sail on sail on and on '-
-
They sailed and sailed as winds might blowG
Until at last the blanched mate saidH
Why now not even God would knowG
Should I and all my men fall deadH
These very winds forget their wayC
For God from these dread seas is goneD
Now speak brave Admiral speak and sayC
He said Sail on sail on and onI
-
They sailed They sailed Then spake the mateJ
This mad sea shows his teeth to nightK
He curls his lip he lies in waitJ
With lifted teeth as if to biteK
Brave Admiral say but one good wordL
What shall we do when hope is goneD
The words leapt like a leaping swordM
Sail on sail on sail on and onI
-
Then pale and worn he kept his deckN
And peered through darkness Ah that nightK
Of all dark nights And then a speckN
A light A light A light A lightK
It grew a starlit flag unfurledO
It grew to be Time's burst of dawnD
He gained a world he gave that worldO
Its grandest lesson On sail onI
